When/why in the heck did it become cool to have malfunctioning muffler?!

Cripes, man. I get the whole "loud pipes save lives" thing on hogs (kind of) and needing some power behind a work truck but it seems every second dolt insists that their car sounds like it's going to explode! It's not even edgy or counter culture anymore because EVERYONE is doing it! GAWD!!..
