Making different volume takes the same

Could someone explain to me how to use, compression or whatever to make uneven volume takes in the same track come out as an even volume. Effects to mimic a huge crowd clapping

My song is fake live. So I'm adding crowd noise, applause, etc. At one point the audience claps along to music. I want it to sound like a crowd of 5,000 in a big auditorium. Has anyone read the entire "Synth Secrets"?

I've gotten to article #22 so far and have loved every minute. I've learned more about synths from this old Sound On Sound series than anything else. Don't even mind the math involved, it's been like a mental workout! Would really recommend this series to anyone wanting to know more ..
