major influences?

There was a time that I thought Todd Rundgren was a wizard a true star. His recordings where he played all the instruments got me into this mess. How about you?
Oh kurt vonnegut had his impact too. And kilgore trout. But that is a different story

Now you may not believe this, Maurice, but it is absolutely true. One a my dearest ol pals (a singer and artist in his own write) who lives right here in nowheresville with me is best buddies with ol Todd. Goes to Hawaii and stays with him and his lovely wife and cooks for em. Course he did wrangle an invite to the White House for Todd durin the Clinton years (he's married to one). I loved "Something/Anything" and "A Wizard, A True Star" but after that, I lost interest. My buddy, Gio, gave me a copy of Todd's latest (self POD produced magnum opus CD) but it didn't move me none. But I'm fickle like that.

I hear myself playing certain phrases on guitar that betray my influences, but I think I've only lately realized how much they'd seeped in..Stuart Adamson (The Skids, Big Country), Bill Nelson (Be-Bop Deluxe, Red Noise), Martin Barre (Jethro Tull), Glen Tilbrook (Squeeze)

Yeah - like I could be half as good as any of 'em.

That album of theirs--The Crossing--has been etched into my brain since I heard it 25 years ago. Around the same time was Yes: 90125 (yeah not a true Yes effort, but the production was amazing and that's what got me interested in recording), and Van Halen 1984 which was the first album that made me realize I'm not a wuss for playing the synthesizer. Dang pretty much anything from the early 80s has left its mark on me.

Dad, having been a pianist inspired me for keys. He died when I was 7.

I'm not really influenced by many people, more so, I just play what I like, and what appeals to my ear. But, hmm... Casanova Deva

Musically, I guess Bill Evans continues to influence my playing.

The person who got me into all this is a guy named Dave Kusik, who used to run a company called Passport Designs. It was he who opened my eyes to the wonders of MIDI, computers, and synthesizers.

Then there was my father who insisted I practice the piano (sometimes, instead of playing baseball with my little buddies -- oh, the pain!!).

Finally, I'd like to thank my wife and children, without whom I'd probably stay in bed all day eating licorice candy and reading detective novels.

+ 1 on Vonnegut Spacey - So it goes.....

With regard to musical influences, Chuck Berry, my first fumbling riffs as a teenager were all based round his classic numbers; John Lennon and George Harrison, growing up in Liverpool, they meant everything to me, Georges economy and ability to serve the song taught me much, Lennon's rhythm guitar playing, evident on much of his output, taught me how songs are constructed and performed; Hendrix, how to expand the envelope, and express yourself, whilst still retaining the grounding of the blues as a musical baseline; SRV for taking this to a different level again; Dave Gilmour, for expression and ecomomy and attention to detail in a signature sound. I pretty much leave it there and leave the rest to my own imagination.

    Peace Love and Understanding

I agree, some major strides in production techniques were being made then. I remember we were in awe of 'Adventures in Modern Recording' by The Buggles, because it sounded so clean, polished, and chock full of quirky ideas.

My biggest influence was / is Gary Numan. Are "friends" electric? came out when i was 15, it was so radical to my ears after the punk and skinhead music of the time. I am still a teenaged Numanoid.

The biggest influences for picking up a bass in the first place were Cliff Burton, Steve Harris, Geddy Lee (and okay I'll admit it, Gene Simmons... ) Currently, even though bass is still my greatest love as a player, I'm more often inspired by non-bass players. U2 as a band and especially The Edge (through Achtung Baby, anyway), Eric Clapton, The Doors, Pink Floyd, B.B. King - all inspire me not necessarily because of the bass parts on their songs, but they influence me as a musician with just their approach to music, creativity, songwriting, cohesiveness as a band, etc.

To hitch on to your wagon Dave:

I don't sound like any of my influences.
The influences for have always about their approcah to music and the drive it created in me to do my own thing with an approach I find.
Have I been successful? Prolly not. But I've loved the journey so far.

That is the funny thing about influences, they don't seem to really show up in your own music in a completely recognizable way. I guess that is why they are that because they influence you to try and play things but ultimately they do not dictate what you play. James's influences are a good example. He didn't list Steve Morse but as a HUGE Steve Morse fan, I hear a lot of Morse like phrasing and vibe in James's solo work.

I always read influences to mean that is who I listen to a lot.
