make a take the active take
how do i make a certain take the 'active' take when the take lanes are closed? ive tried moving a specific take lane to the top or bottom but neither seem to have any effect... what i mean is, I want to have a certain take "on top" so I can slice it and fix the tempo, but for some reason another take that i muted seems to take priority...

... I suppose that closing take lanes negates your wish (a great wish btw). Does this problem not occur with the take lanes OPEN? I mean, can't you use auto-zoom (shift-z) and keep the lanes open but hidden ... assuming the active take remains active with them open? 'Hope this helps.

hey man. well i dont mind using the take lanes but they are still extremely buggy, for example "alt-click" never works properly... an example of when i need this kind of priority is when i have a take of congas that uses 4 mics hence 4 lanes. and i have taken said conga 4 times The best take is take 3 but i want to basically chop up take 3, get it as tight as possible and then use the other takes as back up, meaning i dont want to delete them. this cannot be done if i cannot assign a priority track to the main lane view... the only way is to delete all the other takes, but i need the other takes in order to consolidate, also my cuts have to be perfect across all microphones and when the take lanes are open there are now 4 cuts to be made instead of just select all alt-click or 's' not to mention the huge amount of space that 20 lanes takes up compared to 4..... please i hope somebody at cw has this answer... i am cutting an album and trying to consolidate tracks, it is extremely slow at the moment...

I (think) I have the same gripe. When you collapse the Take Lanes, the resulting audio in the clip doesn't necessarily represent the audio you will hear. What I think might be good for Cakewalk to change is: When you SOLO a Take Lane, the others automatically MUTE (we know this), BUT, the resulting SOLO'd track is the one shown in the "picture" of the Track/Clip when Take Lanes are collapsed. Aside from that, if you have to have multiple Lanes play together, the obvious should be that you need to Bounce those Lanes to a single Take Lane and SOLO that Lane. I suspect the workaround would be to recommend bouncing the Take Lanes you want to a whole new track, then "Hide" the other one with Take Lanes. It's a workaround, maybe until they can check this out for X2b, but it's way confusing to hear something you don't see.

That's what I was going to suggest. Copy the clip to a new track for editing. I know that you want to do what you want to do but I've always comped my takes and bounced them to a clip before editing.

It takes time to bounce, and this means that you're more indoctrinated to edit before mixing. I like to work the opposite way (Mix before editing). The reason is, you might find one verse that works better in a mix than another when you hear it in the final mix. I can't recall if Layers in X1 had this same problem (it probably does), but for some reason, I wasn't confused at what I was seeing on-screen.

I'd just copy the "good" take to another track and edit it there. No hassle of bouncing - plus all your original takes are still in one place. Then if you want to use parts of another take - just copy those parts to the new track and add them accordingly (either split the one that's there and add the new one, or whatever you need to do) This sort of defeats the purpose of the take lanes - but as we know they don't really work the way we want them. I use the take lanes to audiont my takes and choose the best parts - then *copy* the good parts to a new track - then archive the track with all the takes (for safe keeping)...

well. here is the thing... screw it let me just show you a screenshot of what i mean. as soon as this project renders........................................................... here http://www.elijahlucian.ca/congahell.jpg when i condense these down. well i just tried to do it and sonar crashed, needless to say, i get very random results. one half of the same chopped take will be buried and the other half will be "on top" strange ass shtuff. haha *no those aren't my actual recording levels, I increased the view range so i can see the breaths properly for slicing... I might have to try your solution Jbraner... but i just wish that this all worked!!!!

I might have to try your solution Jbraner... But I just realised you'll have to copy the good take from *each* mike (more complexity) but i just wish that this all worked!!!! Me too!

haha true that. not as easy when you are recording bands in the studio. haha. BUT I do wish that Sonar had a drum re-trigger-er I just used a demo of drumagog 5 and it completely changed this mix i was working on! I should submit a suggestion to CW. it's actually SUPER useful..

i comp my tracks,i pick the best parts of each take then delete the un used stuff./ highlight the ones you need and bounce to clips.

yes I am familiar with comping tracks.. that was another thread actually. how slicing doesnt seem to work in the take lanes... gets buggy... also. i have bounced all clips to one clip, however I like to keep my takes in the project until the very final mix, there may be something in there that i need. so if i am to do this with every recorded track we are talking about doubling my track listing from 60ish to 120ish? i dont think so. that's what take lanes are supposed to be for!
