me attempting vocals...
I haven't sung with any sort of real practice regiment for years now - so the quality of my voice is nowhere near where it should be. There's a recording of me playing the acoustic guitar and a sampled piano and (also sampled) electric bass. The acoustic guitar was some junky little First Act guitar that I got for free, lol. Recorded with two AudioTechnica 871R boundary mics into a Mbox (focusrite pre's). "All My Love" (first song) Remember - you might feel the singing sucks. be forewarned.

Josh - As soon as I saw vox and acoustic guitar, I had to take a peek... I like what I'm hearing so far.. I think you have a good voice man. It's a tough thing to expose yourself like this with the instrumentation being sparse, but you did good. nice piano and git playing. More please... you'll only get better.

If I ever get brave enough to sing a song, I only hope my voice sounds this good. This is great! This will be nice to add to your already stellar talents of composing!

Hi Josh. your vocals absolutely do not suck. Nice song too. I have always been a guitarist songwriter who sang back-up and a couple ago I started doing some lead vocals on songs that didn't fit my Heavier Rock project. I discovered my voice wasn't half bad and the more I worked on it the better it got. (You prob already know this). anyway enjoyed the tune. Please check out my recent post on this forum. I Won't Wait for you. Take Care, Lawrence Ellington,

Dude - nice! Before listening, I was honestly thinking that people were just sugarcoating their responses, so I was prepared for a mediocre performance at best. Not the case at all. Your voice sounds great and the song is nice as well. I'm also surprised at the production - very clear. On a side note, it's funny, I've played in bands most of my life and handled my share of lead and background vox, but I've actually never recorded myself singing. Probably because I hate the sound of my voice (don't we all?), which doesn't really work well for the types of music I produce nowadays, and because I don't write lyrics. BTW, what equipment (mic, preamp, etc.) did you use for your vocals? The reason I'm asking is that it sounds like maybe your singing voice is naturally a little thin (?), especially in the upper register, but it comes through the mix pretty clear, warm, and full. Nice work as always and hopefully we'll be hearing more of your vocals in the future. edit: typ0

Sorry Josh, I tried 2 browsers, but my security settings don't like Reverbnation one bit. I never encounter such stuff anywhere else, and I'm not changing a thing for them, only. They do things with OLE automation I don't need.

That totally sucked. Don't give up your day job! (I am kidding ) Josh, if this is you "not as good as it should be" then you will be beyond spectacular when it is as it should be. Please do understand that I have to hate you now. I have made it my policy to hate everybody that can actually sing. Well done. Too short, but rocked none the less. Cheers Shad

geez guys that's really flattering! I know what you mean Cryphonik about hating the sound of your own voice. I did use to be a lot better though. Would you believe there was a time while I was in my first year at college where I was in like 6 separate choirs at once? I used to practice every day for hours on end and I'm really critical of everything that I do now so especially with voice I tend to doubt that it could be any good. ORIGINAL: Roflcopter Sorry Josh, I tried 2 browsers, but my security settings don't like Reverbnation one bit. I never encounter such stuff anywhere else, and I'm not changing a thing for them, only. They do things with OLE automation I don't need. here's a alt. link to the song: http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/149976 funny thing it that people at newgrounds seemed to absolutely despise it! lol (check the score on the left). I don't know what's going on sometimes... it would make sense that the vocals sound thin - I just sort sat down the same as I did with the guitar and sang into the middle of the two pzm mics (I pushed them a little closer together).

Your voice is not bad at all... like any singer, you need to find what you can sing best...and it sounds like you're on the right track.

Yeah, you have a nice voice, Josh. Nice mix, too. Only thought the piano played a few off notes at 1:10, thereabouts - sounds fumbled a bit - other than that no gripes, esp. liked the string reverb noise on the bass.

Josh, vocals not terrible. Nice, smooth in parts. Pitch good except a couple of spots. I thought you sounded really nasal though, and need to work on that and could maybe correct some of that with fx. Noticed the lack of breathe support and thought you might be sitting down, then read that to be the case. The ol’ pipes do get rusty if you don’t keep sing enough. Stay with it. I loved the lyrics and melody. Guitar is nice and some cool sounding progression.

Hey Josh, You got a great voice. I agree with Tom though. Sounds like your singing through your nose a bit. You're very fortunate that it's just a little practice and some minor adjustments. I won't even say what my voice sounds like I'm singing through. Rhyno

you guys are right about my voice being a little nasal. i think you're also right tdye that it's a breath support issue. That's of course going to come with the fact that I haven't practiced for so long...i think i'll try to get back into it.
