mic'ing for a silo?
I've recently just cleaned out a 65 foot tall silo that is about 40 feet in diameter. I am proposing to do some IR's in here with some balloons and some string plucking...maybe some singing as well...I'd like to know what methods are used to produce the best results..such as that is... in this situation. Any ideas would help...

I thought for certain you had mistyped "solo"! I wouldn't be surprised if you're the first to have ever attempted this! I have absolutely no advice for you! good luck!!

Milking a solo? Guitarists do that all the time. I wouldn't think that you could search vertically for the best spot, but definately walk around the floor of the thing w/ someone clapping or making short noises while you search for the best tail. I'm thinking there might be a rotunda-like spot where you get nice, clear echos or 'verb and you can set the mike(s) up there. I suppose there is an internal ladder - close to the top might be another good spot where the reverb collects. @

Got some wireless mics? Or some handheld recorders? Send 'em up attached to some balloons, let 'em float around while ya play.

Prolly whatever you do will be fine. I would use some of each type of mic I have, including the little old tape recorder ones. Got access to the top? Run a rope across, hang a bunch at various heights. Get one as close to center of the structure as possible. Place a few on stands, various heights. Most of what I have read indicates a starter type pistol is used for the initial impulse. Will you have access during recording? If so, place a mic high and one low, and a couple of speakers for stereo input. j

You gonna share some impulses when you get finished? Could be nice. @

You might not like what you hear. These free impulses include a silo as well so it might pay to load these up and have a listen first and see if it is something you really want to go to the trouble of doing, unless you have already done it of course. http://www.voxengo.com/impulses/

I've loaded those up here. I'm not surprised that it would sound like that...these one's might not sound that much different when I'm done..already spent a couple of hours mucking abouts with mic placement. See, I tend to like these kinds of IR's..... @AT...I'll be doing such...hopefully next week..once I find a good site to stuff these in.
