midi guitar strummer
I came accross this midi guitar strummer called Lemonstrum. It looks like you can duplicate real guitar strumming. Has anyone heard of this and is it any good. Or, does anyone know of another midi guitar strummer. I have X1 Studio but I can't tell if X1 has one or not.

It's a pretty solid program with a lot of good presets for strumming, picking, arps, etc. They were even nice enough to let me put one of my songs on their "listen" page!

Not what you are asking, but RealGuitar is a fantastic product for acoustic strumming (samples + strumming system + solo mode). The same company (MusicLab) made a good strumming program for MIDI instruments but for some reason they stopped supporting it.

The same company (MusicLab) made a good strumming program for MIDI instruments but for some reason they stopped supporting it. RealGuitar really is one of the coolest virtual instruments ever. And you're right that there used to be a strumming program by MusicLab - it was included in earlier versions of Sonar. I wrote to them asking if there were no more patterns for their plug-in, and if it was going to be supported - Noooo was the answer, because it basically was competing with their more developed RealGuitar program. But that was a cool thing to have, the MusicLab strummer thingie--can't remember what they called it?-- because you could build an entire MIDI map/sequence of different strums, for an entire song, and then play it through your guitar sampler/synth of choice. For simple up or down strokes on chords you've played, there's still a Strum CAL routine in Sonar, available through CTR+F1. It spaces the notes according to your parameters, and strums what you've played. Simple, but fine for some circumstances. Randy B.

This far I've been happy with the Akkord-guitar of Kontakt. It sounds very good, but is a very basic acoustic steel string strummer. Every now and then, though, I browse around for a dedicated and more capable program, thus reading these comments with great interest. Haven't even tried demos yet. Konradh: "A strumming program for MIDI instruments"..what does it mean?
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Orange Tree Evolution Strawberry and Steel Strings are as good as it gets. I have Real Strat and as good as it is Strawberry beats it. A bit cheaper but still good is Indiginus Acoustic guitar collection. It sounds very good but the chord detection is not as good as the Orange Tree and Music Lab products. The problem with the Orange Tree and Indiginus stuff is you need the full version of Kontakt to run it. If you want to strum in Sonar X1 or 8.5, you can use the Arpeggiator with a guitar sound in Dim Pro. It gets you part of the way there. The main drawback is the strums are triggered from the root note only. So you cant mix major and minor chords on the same midi track. Cakewalk should develop it so they have proper chord detection.

Kalle, Sorry I didn't exaplin. MusicLab (makers of RealGuitar, RealStrat, etc.) use to sell something called Rhythm n Chords. Here's how it worked: • You picked a strumming pattern from a library that had somewhat descriptive names. (e.g., Straight 8ths, Syncopated 8ths with mute, etc.). Some trial and error was needed until you learned which patterns were which and which you liked. • You then typed in the chords you wanted (e.t.c, C, Am, Dsus). in a chord chart format the program provided. • The program created MIDI notes in the track. The MIDI notes were guitar chords with some notes offset a few ticks and some velocity variations to simulate strumming. • If the track with the MIDI notes was assigned to a fairly good guitar sample, you got strumming. I did not usually create a chord chart for a whole song: I just created a few chords and then copied or edited them as needed to finish the song. Once you have used RealGuitar, however, you will not want to mess with something like this.

By the way, if you ever get RealGuitar, they have an excellent forum, but you can shoot me a message if you get hung up. There were a couple of simple things I did not snap to at first (putting controller messages in the track event list, using Pattern Playing mode, etc.), but once you know the tricks, it is ridiculously easy to use. The manual is good, but, as with all manuals, the writers assume you know what they are talking about. Also, as you know, Sonar note numbers (e.g., C1 v C3) don't always match other people's documentation, which can be confusing when using key switches. Acoustic Legends HD from Vir2/BigFish uses a free Kontakt player. I have it and it sounds really good, but it is much more limited for strumming than RealGuitar, although it is good for solos and has some good non-guitar sounds bundled with it (like ukelele and mandolin). RealGuitar will translate simple keyboard chords to guitar voicings or let you define exactly what notes and what order you want in the chord, something you don't get with other VIs.

Don't forget, as I mentioned earlier, that Sonar has a CAL file to give you instant up and down strums with a spacing between notes that you set. Look for "strum" in the CAL folder which you get to by pushing CTRL+F1. At least it spaces the notes for you in a way that's otherwise virtually impossible to get from straight keyboard playing. And of course it's just spacing/strumming the notes you play or insert, so it's very basic, without giving you correct guitar chord structures- but it's a potentially helpful freebie. Konradh, thanks for reminding me of what that pre-Real Guitar plug-in from Music Lab was called - Rhythm n Chords. I used to use it a lot some years ago when it was a free plug-in that came with Cakewalk. It was the bare bones beginnings of a strum library etc which is now what all these guitar emulations use. You mentioned putting controller messages in the event list - You've found that to be somehow better or easier than using control panes in the PRV--? Randy B.

Hey, rbrowser. Don't know that the event list thing is easier or better--just that I have a standard file I have created with text messages containing the definitions of all the RG controllers and values plus some pre-fab controller events. I paste this into the start of a track, set the controller values, and I'm ready to go. When I want to change modes, chord positions, etc. I just copy those controller events and tweak values. Using PRV is probably better for most people--I just personally don't use that view much and am more comfortable in staff and Event. Guess my point was that some newbies actually change the RG modes by using the RG interface itself and that is very limiting. My music is very organic--not too much electronica--so I gravitate towards stuff like Ivory II, Vienna, and RealGuitar that provide realistic acoustic sounds. By the way, I did not know about the CAL thing--guess I overlooked it. I am going to give that a try with the Acoustic Legends samples. It is crazy how many guitar tracks I cut back in the day by moving notes one-by-one and tick-by-tick.

The CAL script is there, but you'll see that it's extremely basic. More effective than trying to use the arpeggiater for strums though. Randy B.

Also fender makes the Rock Band 3 Squire guitar which is a real stringed guitar with midi. ($279) Great for midi strumming, easy on the pocket book, and fun to play rock band when you need to get away from the studio. :) No sounds included, but makes for great strum triggering.

Just wanted to throw in my two cents in favor of MusicLab RealGuitar 2L. I have it and have recorded original tracks, it sounds good even solo, and works great as a backround intrument as well. To hear what it can do, check out, "The Lonely Guitar", "Touch the Sun", and pretty much every other song on my SoundClick site. I've even had several artists contact me to play guitar tracks for them on their albums, only to find that I don't play guitar... it is MusicLab... You won't be dissapointed...

But I have use Musilabs RG and RS, Rob Papens RG, OTS acoustic and electric strawberry, even Steinbergs RG2. I just picked up a Roland GR20 used that I hooked up to a Squier Strat for strumming and such. However, once you get the hang of the keyswitching in the above VSTs it is very convincing.

Hi Michael- I'm not konradh ;), but: 1. Open the Event List for the MIDI track feeding RealGuitar. 2. Press Insert to add an event where you want the Mode change (or any other parameter) 3. Change the Type to Control 4. Enter the number of the CC to control the parameter (link to list below -- they're also in the manual, but without the value ranges) 5. Enter the value in the "Data" column. There's a list of the CC#s and parameters here: http://www.musiclab.com/c...m/viewtopic.php?t=2639 eg. for Mode, the values are: CC#54, Mode 0-10 --> Solo 11-31 --> Harmony 32-52 --> Chords 53-74 --> BassChord 75-95 --> BassPick 96-116 --> Direct 117-126 --> RnC So to change to Chords Mode, for eg., enter CC#54 and a Data value between 32 and 52. BTW, you can also draw these in the PRV Controller pane. I usually do it there because for me it's easier to see where I want them, esp. since it's best to put them a hair before the actual time you want the change. HTH- -Susan

I sent you the file along with some very quick and basic notes on things I had to learn the hard way. MusicLab's forum is very helpful, and the staff is good about answering questions sent to the support email—although sometimes the replies are a bit cryptic, like the manual. Maybe it is the translation from Russian to English. That said, the guys at MusicLab try to help and want the customer to be happy. I use RealGuitar for very basic strumming and simple solo lines because my music leans towards very structured tracks. (Someone described my music as Broadway tunes with weird chords and depressing lyrics.) The samples on the MusicLab site, however, demonstrate the wide range of things you can do--including amazingly realistic solo performances. One guy posted some Christmas songs that are unbelievable. I don't know how companies like this can sell enough copies to make money considering how reasonable the price is. I am just glad they can do it.
