midi keyboard for drums

Does anyone use a midi keyboard for drums? I'd like to play 'live' drum track using midi keyboard. (I'm also wondering about the sound quality) I've recorded on digital drums before, but I wasn't impressed with the cymbol sound quality. Rich.

One of the usb midi keyboards would work fine? They're pretty cheap. Rich.

I saw the Sonic Implants - Blue Jay Drums - $29.99 - maybe that would help DCshoesgirl as well. Rob, you're saying additional software like Sonic Implants would be required to get the polished sound? So right out of the package, the midi keyboard wouldn't provide the sound for decent demo? Thanks for previous responses, Rob and DCshoesGirl. Rich.

    Rich,

A MIDI keyboard will just send electronic signals. The sounds are housed either in the sound card's internal synth, or a computerized soft synth. (The exception, of course, would be using something like a Yamaha keyboard that has sounds built in and MIDI, although I'm not a huge fan of Yamaha's low-end PCR sounds). I've got an M-Audio Keystation 61es and an Evolution eKeys. The eKeys is a very small 37 key controller that allows me to quickly trigger samples (loops and such). The 61es is full-sized, plays relatively well, and I highly recommend it.

As far as drum sounds, I paid a little more and got the DR-008 drum sampler and the NSkit_7 samples from naturalstudio.co.uk (it ended up about $200 total). It is truly awesome (over 18 GB of samples) and does more than even I need it for. I've got a song that I'm almost done with that I wanted to show off in this forum, and it uses those drums, so you can get a taste for what they can do.

    Hope this helps,
    Joe

The DR-008 is an awesome drum synth, and the NS kit is real nice, I do like the sonic implants kits better, they are true pro recordings from a world class studio. Also if one uses a good sound font player to play them they sound great. I also realy love jamstix for realism. all this requires a VSTi wrapper of course.

One thing that bears mentioning, is that some keyboards have great sounding drum patches, the yamahas are not bad at all, just get a good solid and clean recording of them

I actually disagree with robo for once! Just in the drum choice, though. I've never been overly impressed with Sonic Implant's blue jay sounds, it just didn't have the right sound for me. The nskit (NOT the free one) is a different ballgame. I think that the free nskit is not that great. The "pay-fer" one has seven kits recorded in pro rooms with pro equipment. It also has every articulation that you could think of, and the instrument list keeps expanding (tambourines already, congas on the way). Again, this all comes down to personal preference. You may be better off learning loop slicing and use Smart Loops or DOD or something. All of the options we've offered will sound good, its just up to you to look around, listen to samples, and try to get a taste of what you want to do.

Joe I have not heard the full NS kit, just the free one, so I have no idea, the sonic implants work so well for me in the sampler in MTS, so i use them I also love jamstix, even though i only have the demo now, I will purchase soon.

Thanks Joe and Rob! I might just try and see what midi sounds like though stock sound card - some of the M-Audios models have gotten good reviews. I'd like drums, but it would be nice to play some keyboard sounds as well. Rich.

Higher end sound cards don't have MIDI synths on them. They provide low latency so you can use soft synths in realtime. So you're still stuck with looking for drums.

Rob, I know I've asked you about this, but how "real" is jamstix? I guess I need to pick up a demo...

The kit it comes with is nice, but it will import many other kits, maybe NS, so check it out. it learns as it goes

Since I route all MIDI (including drums) through my keyboard which are sampled, i.e., real, drums, the sound is fine. But you're right about the cymbals. A real cymbal resounds for some time, but the MIDI cymbal stops sounding as soon as you input another, giving them a chopped-off sound. I'll check out some of these as soon as I stop working 14 hours a day and sleeping all weekend. Greg

You can open a sound font player inside jamstix and import a kit like NS and play the i tried it last night and it works great.

thats pretty cool, rob. Personally, I like playing them in w/my controller, but I'll give the demo a whirl. btw, you should check out the full nskit. (naturalstudio.co.uk). It's great value for money (18GB of samples for 100 bucks).

Greg, you can use a sampler like DR-008 with drums to set the cymbals to be polyphonic so that you can smack em around just like the real things.
