midi keyboard/workstation midi output

I am looking to do the following:

I create a loop in some type of midi keyboard/workstation/sequencer. I then start it looping. For example I create the notes c,e,f,g and loop them continuously on the device. I want to then send the midi stream of that loop into Sonar. In Sonar I want the ongoing stream of midi notes coming from the keyboard/workstation - so I want to see on the track the full sequence of notes. So if I looped  c,e,f,g 16 times my Sonar track would show 64 midi notes in a row - it would not indicate any loop/invoke the looping function in Sonar.

Which products would do this? I would prefer the simplest one possible with the least amount of built-in sounds, bells and whistles, sliders/knobs, etc. Ideally a straightforward midi keyboard controller that had a loop button on it would be all I need - however if the only device that will do this has built-in sounds I can work with that. Also I want a new product for this - something that is currently on sale - I do not want to get anything used. If there is a Cakewalk hardware device that would do this I would be glad to look at it.

Any response to this question is appreciated in advance.

Do you have a reason for requiring an outboard midi device ?
I ask because you can do what you want and a lot more within Sonar itself.

Paul P has a good point. What you've described is also going to require some way of providing Sonar a midi sync so the timing is correct which means the controller will need to provide master clock to sonar.

There are many controllers that will do this but unless you're familiar with midi, the controller, and Sonar it is going to be a small challenge to do it as you've described.

Thanks for the quick responses. Regardless of the complexity can either of you name a specific keyboard workstation/synth/sequencer that would do this? For instance the Korg Kross looks like it might. Have either of you worked with it or similar units from other manufacturers? If not should I just repost under 'Korg Kross - midi capture' so as to find somebody who has?

I am not familiar with the Korg Kross but I have a Korg Oasys I have used to send midi and audio data to Sonar. I used the sequencer on the Oasys to control Sonars play head which required setting Sonar to receive Master clock from the Oasys and, IIRC, I may have had to use midi machine control setting, in Sonars preferences, also.

It has been a very long time ago since I did this but I do remember it was somewhat involved. Sonar only recorded the midi or audio stream using it this way and Sonars timing, start/stop was all controlled by the Oasys sequencer. It did not invoke Sonars 'loop' function.

You might want to ask your question on the Korg forums if it is specific to the Korg Kross but you might get lucky here. You could also do a google search on controlling Sonar from external sequencer or similar. The search engine on this forum does not work so well so you may not find anything using it.

Sorry I could not be of more help.

    Kind regards,
    Rick

Thanks. I will dig in further with Korg.
