midi note nudge bug (phantom note created) - filed with CW ID 5422

http://www.cakewalk.com/support/contact/Problem-Report-Status.aspx?ID=5422

Just sharing in case anyone else has run into this. The following video really explains the issue. Basically nudging midi notes creates phantom notes. Reproducible every time... well mostly (watch the video).

Thanks to whoever suggested Jing (can't remember), but it works fantastic for this kind of thing.

Cheers!

Looks like a side-effect of having Non-destructive MIDI Editing enabled. When you nudge notes with that enabled, it breaks them out into separate clips, and you get the the "orphaned" velocity tails showing in the PRV. They seem to correspond to the beginning and end of the new clip that's created. When you bounce the clips back together, they'll go away.

Both having the note(s) broken out as separate clips and the orphaned velocity tails seem to be a new "feature" of X1. Neither happens in 8.5.3.

But I'm not fond of Non-destructive MIDI Editing feature in general because of all the slip-edited clips it creates in different situations, so I usually have it turned off (Preferences > Editing in X1).

Good find. I'll just disable it. I didn't really want it on anyway, it was a default setting. Good catch! I never even though to look at the track clips, since I do most editing in the PRV. I only look at the clips to either copy a section or launch the PRV.

    Cheers

There is one issue I know of with having Non-destrucitve MIDI Editing turned off that you should be aware of:

If you copy a MIDI clip that ends with a controller event (e.g. CC64 sustain pedal up), that controller will be ignored by SONAR in the new clip. You can still see it in the event list, but the clip boundary moves so the controller is not longer visible, and it doesn't get processed. IIRC, dragging the clip boundary back out so you can see the controller has no effect. You might have to delete and re-insert the event to get it working again.

When I run into this, I usually just re-enable Non-Destructive MIDI Editing temporarily, and re-copy the clip.

you nailed it. disable destructive midi editing and all is right with the world.
