midi problem: HS not receiving??

New to HS here trying to set it up with my keyboard.
I have: HS2002, a Casio PX-100, connected using a Turtle Beach USB midi cable.

I set my midi input to the USB midi, change the midi track input channel to 'omni', set the ouput to my soundcard (Santa Cruz DLS synth). The red lights are flickering when i press the keyboard keys so I know its sending.
I arm the track for recording, hit the record button, but nothing happens when I press the keys. No events seem to be coming through.

I think HS is receiving midi because the light is flickering, and I know it can send midi, because I can send stuff to my keyboard.

ANY HELP OUT THERE!!! this is driving me crazy!

And you do mean that you're trying to record MIDI data, right?

Output needs to be set to where a synth is-You're wanting to play your keyboards which are connected to the USB device, yes?--So the output should be sent to that device also. If you were using a soft synth, then the output of the MIDI track would be pointed to it--like if you were using the Edirol synth that comes with HS.

Or are you trying to play the synth on your sound card?

If you're trying to play the sounds on your keyboards--do you have a MIDI Out from the computer going to its In?

Look carefully at your set up and routing again--I'm not sure you've described it accurately?

Are you recording on a MIDI track or an Audio track? HS2002 is a bit old, you should consider upgrading to the latest version.

I'm guessing you don't have the track parameters set up right. Like the MIDI through toggle button or something. Dave is right. Consider upgrading to Sonar 4 Home Studio. Then consider taking the tutorials that come with the software, and if that doesn't help consider a book like "Sonar 4 Power".

Would the "LOCAL ON/OFF" option on the keyboard have anything to do with this?

    Thanks,

ok, I upgraded to SONAR 4 went through the tutorial and am still having the same problem.
I go to record and nothing I play on the keyboard shows up in SONAR, everything seems setup right and the little red lights in my system tray are flashing so i know MIDI data is being sent.
Yes, I am using a MIDI track, not an audio track.
I have the input set up as Omni..

still dont really know what the problem could be

What do you have selected in Options-MIDI Devices? The order matters too.

    alkaline,
Did your USB-MIDI adapter come with a CD with drivers on it? Did you follow the install instructions EXACTLY? If you plugged in the USB adapter before drivers were installed, and allowed the wizard to take over, more often than not, the signal will be misdirected. Since your problem is consistent, this would appear to be the case. If that has happened, uninstall the drivers, and try it again.
Dave is on the right track. Does your USB device show up in MIDI devices? It may appear as "USB Audio Device".

Yes, I have it selected under the options (Turtle Beach UBS Midi 1x1)
I'm pretty sure i've installed the drivers correctly, the diagnostic software that came with it says everything is A-OK... thanks for the help so far.. any more ideas? I will probably try reinstalling the drivers and see if that works.

hit the record button, but nothing happens when I press the keys. No events seem to be coming through.

What do you mean by "nothing happens"? Surely something must happen. Does the timeline scroll across the screen? When you hit stop, does it stop and then you see some lines in the track? We need a better description of what is happening.

Is the Turtle Beach USB the only MIDI device selected for input?

Also, can you play Tutorial1.cwp? (all MIDI tracks)

yes, the timeline scrolls, when i hit stop no lines appear, nothing was recorded (even though I hit keys).
Yes, Turtle Beach USB is the only MIDI device selected for input.

I havent tried that specific sample (Tutorial1), but I can play MIDI tracks through my soundcard and through my keyboard. Is sending MIDI data from my keyboard to my computer that seems to be the problem

Yet you state when you press keys on the keyboard, the MIDI Input/Output indicator indicates that it is receiving the keypresses. Hmmm.

Have you tried a different USB cable? Have you tried using a standard MIDI cable? Try re-installing the Turtle Beach USB card. Make sure you install it properly. Most USB devices have you install the drives BEFORE you plug them in to the computer. If you don't do that, you may get unpredictable results.

Process of elimination is the only way to trace a problem like this.

I reinstalled the Turtle Beach USB drivers which did not fix the problem.

No I have not tried a different USB or standard cable. I will probably go try to exchange the USB for another USB and see if that helps. I'd try to get a standard MIDI-to-Joystick cable but I can not find ANY stores around here (Denver) that carry them.

    Alkaline,
Go to Musicians Superstore(92nd and Sheridan). Talk to Lauri or Trent. They have the USB and joystick port MIDI cables.

Plenty of them. But the sales people seem to hear Charlie Browns parents when you ask them about this kind of stuff.

    Wah-wah-wah....

That's why I almost exclusively shop online... No traffic, no parking and no wah-wah-wah! Plus that forces you to do your homework (online) and then you'll know what you're getting instead of listening to some know-nothing do-nothing salesperson trying to sell you what their boss told them to get rid of. A little knowledge goes a long way.
