midi tempo not right when importing or opening

I use pianoteq to write ideas and improvise save as a midi then open in Sonar X3.This bpm of this piece of music is 91( roughly, its timing is a bit all over the place) but when I open it in Sonar it is so much slower. If I open the file straight into sonar it loads it at 100 bpm but it's slower. If I create a new project and import midi I have t crank the bpm up to about 125 to even get it close to the right speed. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it.
Thanks Justin

Why don't you just load pianoteq as a Synth (VSTi) in Sonar. Then you don't have to save as a midi file or import a midi file created somewhere else.

The poor guy had the mange and was out in the day time. Now back to your problem. I'll have to give it some serious thought then. I'll get back to you unless someone else finds it first.

How does it sound if you open the MIDI file in Windows Media Player, using your onboard wavetable synth for playback? If the tempo's not encoded properly in the file, the problem should show up there or in other MIDI players as well.

Hi bluearrow,
What is your clock source set to on your audio interface? And what are your options?

I have never used Pianoteq, but the manual seems to indicate that there is an option in the MIDI player to alter the playback speed. That suggests the possibility that it is playing in the Pianoteq MIDI player at a speed that is faster than the MIDI tempo that it has been recorded at. When imported into Sonar, it is either being given a default tempo (because the original file did not include tempo data), or it is being imported at the true MIDI tempo recorded in Pianoteq but the rate is masked when it is played in Pianoteq because it is overridden by the playback speed setting.

So the midi file plays correctly in Windows Media Player. So I'm guessing its a problem transferring it to Sonar

I think you already know this, but just to be clear:

- Importing will ignore the file tempo in favor of SONAR's existing project tempo(s).

- In order to preserve the file tempo, you need to use File > Open, and navigate to the .MID file or drag and drop it into SONAR with no project already open.

(Edited to correct misinformation about what happens when you drag and drop.)

I just installed the trial version of cubase and its the same problem. Also every file I open from Pianoteq opens the same -120bpm and 4/4 -in Sonar,Cubase the same. So my guess is the issue is with Pianoteq.Thankyou all for your input and ideas

ok this is what i got from Pianoteq, doesnt really help ,any ideas,
"Hi Justin,
The midi files exported by Pianoteq do not contain any tempo or time
signature information, the hosts just picks some default values (120bpm
4/4)."

It is possible to write a MIDI file with no tempo information in it. If that's the case, it should play at the correct tempo when SONAR is set to 91BPM, regardless of whether you import it into an existing project at that tempo or open/import it into a project with some other tempo and change it to 91.

But you mentioned in your OP that the tempo is "all over the place", so I'm thinking that means you're going to have some work to do to align the timeline to it in any case.

How did you come up with the 91 figure? Is that what Pianoteq was set to, and you played to a click but did not keep good time?

If the standalone Pianoteq can render audio, importing the audio into SONAR will allow you to use Audiosnap or Set Measure/Beat At Now to figure out what the tempo really is.

Hi Brundlefly,
I know its 91 because i played with a click track but the timing is a bit sloppy because I was writing off the top of my head.I saw another post of yours which has fixed the problem for me.
"Snap the Now time to the last measure , hit Shift+M to bring up Set Measure/Beat At Now, enter a measure (greater or less in my case as I have quite a few midi files that need adjusting) and OK.
SONAR will change the tempo to  around the MIDI without altering its absolute playback timing."
Perfect with a bit of trial and error on my part.
Thanks heaps
