mini midi keyboard

Have any of you guys tried the Akai LPK25 or the M audio 32? Both are about $69. I'm wanting something simple and small, that will work in 32 bit or 64 bit. I'm finding the piano roll a huge pain.

For what it's worth, full-size keyboards with MIDI connections can be found on ebay or craigslist for about what you would pay for these.
Or did you want something extremely portable?

I've messed around a bit with the Akai at GC. They didn't have the M-Audio at the time.
For me, the small keys are a little claustrophobic, but I have fairly large hands.
I would suggest trying them out if you can. If you are comfortable with the keys, either one should be a decent unit.
I tend to agree somewhat with your view on the PRV.
A controller is a much better way to go for tracking live sounding synths.
The PRV is excellent for cleaning up errant notes and making adjustments.
As with any instrument ( which your controller is), do some comparisons first.
You want to be comfortable using it.
At any rate, a controller is a good move.

The problem with the small mini keyboards is that they have en extremely limited range of keys. Something like 2.5 to 3 octave range is very limiting. You can use it for bass and strings, but playing piano parts on it are difficult since a 5 octave range is generally needed for piano. Even 5 octaves can be limiting to someone used to playing an 88 key piano

As Greg said.... for around the same price, you can easily buy one of the larger keyboards  with a 5 octave range.

Unless portability is the reason, and easy of carry, I would look for a minimum of 5 octaves (61 keys).

At a music store a few years back I saw brand new economy keyboards with price tag stickers around $60.  As Greg points out... there are a bunch of these things out there that people are trying to sell. Check Ebay & Craigslist locally.

Another good option is to check the local want ads in musical gear, check the bulletin boards at music stores for used gear, and check the yard sales on Saturdays as well. I have seen musical gear for sale at a number of yard sales, and even bought an electric guitar in a hard case for $20 at one sale. I sold it a week or two later to another musician who saw me playing it at a club, and made a profit. It was OK but not at all like my Gibson so I didn't regret letting it go.

Which ever way I go, I'm a little concerned about how to hook this up. The newer controllers are usb, the older ones have the traditional midi I/O. Should I go direct to the pc or ( I have a small m audio midi interface) should I connect it to my audio interface? I have 4 usb 2.0 inputs on my pc.

Do you have an audio interface or are you using the computer's sound card?
Do you have the latest MIDI drivers for the MIDI interface and your operating system?

I'm using a Line 6 hd500 as interface for the time being. I also have a small midi interface that I bought to do updates on my DT50 amp...I think it's a maudio uno or motu uno (I'd have to dig it out). If this controller (I ordered the maudio keystation mini 32) will work with the usb, I can order an interface without midi I/O such as the Focusrite scarlett 2i2. I want to free up my HD500 so I can use the DT50's direct out...or be able to  mic the amp if wanted. I can't use the hd500 as an interface and use the line6link for the dt50 at the same time. It would also be nice to have the pc,interface and midi controller hooked up and working without having to break out all of the guitar stuff when I'm mixing or working on midi tracks. I've heard the Focusrite has better pres than Presonus but, the presonus 22vsl had midi I/0's.

MY Hd500 has midi I/O's too. So I can hook up the controller that way if I need to but, If I have to do that, I will know I need to buy an interface with midi. At that point I may go with the Roland quad capture as the Presonus has mixed reviews. I don't really need anymore than two inputs anyway cause I work by myself 99% of the time. I think, I think too much!

I got my little M-Audio keystation 32 in today. I plugged it into usb, opened up MC6, Inserted a soft snyth, Hit a key and it worked! Easy. The input says Omni and the output is whatever snyth is being used. If everything in life could be so simple... I guess this means the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 will be my next purchase.
