mixing console with the PC mentality = COOL STUFF!

I saw this in the latest Tape Op and couldn't help but think it's the coolest thing since sliced bread:

It's a customizable console based on the API 500 "lunchbox" format

What really intrigues me is the idea that there are dozens of designers and manufacturers making products that fit into this consoles card slots. It's almost PC-like in that there is tremendous competition to create all knids of cool circuits.

It's mix and match heaven!

OK, it's also expensive... but have you ever seen anything cooler than this?

I went to the Vintage King site:

http://vintageking.com/Tree-Audio-500-by-Inward-Connections

But I also went to a link that Mix Online had:

http://www.boutiqueaudio.com/inwardconnections.htm

that site had this confusing quote:

"Boutique Audio and Design has had a long relationship with Inward Connections. Since they’ve discontinued manufacturing product, Boutique Audio has taken up the challenge. We’re now producing various select products from the Inward Connections’ line"

So it almost appears the Inwards Connection compnay folded just before getting this out... or a new company... Maybe Tree Audio or maybe Boutique Audio is picking up the project.

In any event it's an idea worth further development.

best regards,
mike

    "Payments as low as $1163/Month."

In that case, I'll take two!

Supposedly the Chandler people are working on one as well. Someone posted some pictures and it was pretty amazing looking. There are some others as well I think. Someone showed one filled all the way in, and I added it up to somethin glike $40K worth or so, though I guess you'd get a fair discount if you bought them all at once.

Of course it's expensive... but it's meant to compete with equally priced products AND it has the basis of being customizable by the end user while each *500* module you may wish to sell off to replace with something else will maintain some value because other people with lunch boxes seem happy to try new/old things.

I like my Chandler preamp... that's cool to think they are looking at this design as well.

Are you by chance confusing it with a Toft?

    from:

    http://vintageking.com/site/files/consoles.htm?gclid=CPST27_9-ZUCFRJ4xgodjW7YEw

Tree 500 Console by Inward Connections

    SSL Matrix Recording Console

API 1608 Discrete 16 Channel Console

Rupert Neve Designs 5088 Fully Discrete Analogue Mixing Console

    Wunder Audio Wunderbar Console

If the consoles shown above are the competition the price is right in the ball park! I find the flexibility intriguing.

    Here's another one:

    http://petesplaceaudio.com/MARK_VIII.html

Of course something like that is not so much a console as an tracking/summing bus type of thing.
