mixing for loudness

Hi guys,
Trying to get a feel for mixing and mastering...   do you typically, at the mixing stage, try to get the absolute loudest mix you can as well ?   Or do you mix just to get the right balance, and leave the loudness aspect just for the mastering stage ?

Mastering Stage

Though it does help if you employ gently compression on your tracks, then a bit more on your busses, and a bit more on your master, rather than just slam your master buss

A very affordable (approx. $100) and VERY TRANSPARENT mastering Limiter with a mastering bus compressor and great meter set is the Slate Digital FG-X. I think it is excellent
boost11 is so-so but when you push it , falls apart pretty badly.

Don't put anything on the master bus if it's going to a mastering engineer. But mix through gentle dynamics so you have a better idea of how it will sound after processing, then bypass the dynamics before bouncing.
