more YouTube evidence that musicians are still out there making music: Ana Free

I was looking at some videos with a singer I worked with last week and stumbled on Miss Ana Free over in the related videos column.

Wow... just a nice natural talent from a actual real life music playing human... not bad... not perfect... just right.

http://www.youtube.com/wa...LU&feature=related

If you don't like that song take a look at the other 90 or so songs she has posted.

Hat's off!

best regards,
mike

There's something about the DIY versions that seem more interesting than the slick venture capital productions.

It seems inevitable that someone with that natural star appeal is going to get support... but I am glad I stumbled on the home made videos first... they seem charmed and the quality of the performance transcends the lo-fi technology.

In any event, thanks for adding the link.

I think you are right about the rich seam of distribution success currently available via YouTube judging by the amount of hits, but I'm not seeing anything I like from this particular performer.

I'm just getting an impression of a narcissistic pretty little thing peddling saccharine sweetened apple pie from behind a slightly above average level of talent.

Some of the homespun talent we are blessed with on this forum is far more impressive if I was going to hire a talent for a commercial project and given the choice between our very own Julianna and Ms Free here then seriously Ms Free wouldn't get a look in.

It's only my subjective view, but yuck!

Yeah I like that too Jon... I wonder if she can keep my attention with a DIY video rather than a lip sync production with reverb and compression.

The lyric writing is certainly far beyond Miss Free's original work... I just happen to really like well performed cover songs... because I figure there's nothing wrong with singing a great song.

I'm surprised your response was yuck rather than "not my cup of tea"... because the straight up performances I just watched seem fairly well done.

     Something for everyone!!!

     all the best,

Here in the south east USA, encountering above average live performance talent is a dime a dozen experience... I'm fascinated with understanding more about that special something that translates to wide distribution and possible financial success.

That is my response when I get the wrong cup of tea...   I just think if that girl was chocolate she'd have eaten herself by now.

OK here's the same LM song live without the production if you thought the 'verb was overkill...

I'm realizing I know this song from the college radio station... it's nice.

I have to admit, I think I prefer Miss Free's ability to smile while she plays and sings into a simple camera mic.

She certainly seems like a child of privilege and perhaps a bit naive to the real world all while portraying a sheltered upper middle class sophistication... (hey she's playing a $4000 guitar) but it seems to me that Miss Free could just as easily work the boys for drinks and all expense paid vacations at Ibiza instead of learning a hundred songs and playing out for a living.

I sincerely think you've been a wee bit hard on her.

    That's all I'll say. :-)

I've seen Rihanna jam with some real island boys on some tuff gong styles and been very impressed with her innate talent.

But, she's not my cup of tea.

I ran across this song bird a while back. She ought to go far but then again she may be too talented to make it.

This was pretty cool too. Looks like this was filmed just a bit before T-bone Burnett died.

The tongue stud turned me off... self mutilation in the name of fashion is not my cup of tea. :-)

The Diane Birch song is fantastic... it's just a great song with a perfect arrangement and production... wow! I have to say, it sounds like it took a village to make a song sound that nice... which is good stuff... but it reminds of a time when the song writer was just a part of the whole and her marketing machine presents here as the next new song writing genius. Maybe they should just emphasize the darn good music!

When did T-Bone Burnett pass on?

When "Daryl" started singing I didn't realize who it was and I thought... hmmm, that guy can sing... he's a natural.

    :-)

Then I figured out his last name.

    That's a cool show.

    The  EVIDENCE is compelling.

I wish he used his natural voice on that song... he spoke just before he started singing and I thought... wow, what a naturally strong voice.

    He's a player for sure.

Did he really hit a phrase looper before he took his solo? If so that's just too much to consider for an old guy like me. Hat's off!

Kinda reminds me of my nephew Jake.

Sorry got my T-Bones mixed up it was T-Bone Wolk who played with Hall and Oates for years who passed away.
He was the rhythm player who is sitting beside Daryl in the video.

I watched that whole show... it displayed some great musicianship.

I had just read a note in the AFM magazine about a tribute they had the other day for T-Bone Burnett and I guess I still had his name stuck in my mind.

I kind of lose my train of thought when the word T-Bone is mentioned.
