moving from X2 to X3 , worth it?
I currently am using Producer X2. All the goodies like addictive drums 2, melodyne and the blue tube stuff have me intrigued, but is there anything in X3 itself that would represent what any of you would consider to be a significant step backwards? Lost features,"fixes and workflow enhancements" that are lackluster or more hindurance than enhancement? $99 bucks is a steal for the extra stuff, but not at the expense of the main functionality of the DAW itself. Your thoughts? Tim Oh BTW I have an extremely robust computer, that is having no problem whatsoever running X2. (Windows 7 64 bit, i7 quadcore , 16G RAM two hard drives, you get the idea). T

With my work flow it was no brainer to upgrade but I've been really enjoying working with the X series and looking forward to where Cakewalk are going to take it.

Is it worth it? Short answer. Yes. Long answer. Yes. In regards to any steps backwards... not at all IMO. In fact all the cool stuff in X2 is way cooler in X3 and works much more reliably. HOWEVER... you will have to spend some time learning about the new Comping mode. Took me about a half hour and I still need to go back to my cheat sheets every so often but it is well worth the effort AND you can still use the other record/edit modes (Sound On Sound, Overwrite) for traditional editing until you get the hang of things. Cheers.

The new comping and Melodyne make it a no brainer for me. If you do vocals, the Melodyne upgrade is a must. Addictive Drums and BiFilter are extra goodies. I don't use the BlueTubes a lot but if you don't own a lot of third party stuff they are a nice addition and it's a well-rounded collection.

The Blue Tubes limiter is an excellent alternative to Boost11 if you do not have any other alternatives. Also there is a bunch of other cool stuff in that package that is useful for those of us with a limited plug in library. For example there is a Pultec model which Sonar had not included previously and I never would have spent money on (and really had no idea how cool/useful pultecs were until I used the Blue Tubes one). Very nice add on and I'm looking forward to playing around with some of the other stuff. Seriously I didn't think I NEEDED those things and I guess technically I don't and I'm sure there are better versions of all the models in that BT bundle but I am certainly glad I have them. Not only do I get some cool/useful goodies that are WAY different than what I had before I get to see how specific things work. Like now I know that a Pultec is something I would use and maybe in the future worth spending some dough on to get one of the higher end plugs. I'd also kind of know how to use a hardware version if I ever encountered one. Neat.

If you want the clip background color you applied to the track to be automatically applied to new clips recorded on the track, it's not possible in X3. IOW, a newly recorded clip will always have the default black background color.
Try the demo first.

There's a ton of long threads with people not liking the colors, be careful we might get another one :). I don't mind it myself but that's not to say other people's concerns are not legit. However as this thread is about X2 to X3, well if you don't like the colours you don't have to use them. So that's no reason not to upgrade to X3.
Duct tape and rope however is an incentive for me.

i was at this decision as well, and my only regret, that I didn't upgrade sooner!! But I hadn't long before upgraded to X2, which was the cause of my indecision. X3 is a lot more stable for me, but the the comping, melodyne, (which I upgraded to editor), AD2, and in particular, the Blue Tubes stuff, has had a massive effect on not only my workflow, but the quality of what I am doing, Nearly 3 quarters of the way now into an album, with the first 2 songs done in X2, is forcing me to go back and re-do them, because what I have done with the last 3 songs, has made them sound, not bad, but not as good. I mostly put this done to spending less time comping/arranging, and a what is obvious to me now, less latency issues, which has allowed better recordings, and has resulted in almost non-existant time corrections of takes. My advice, it's a must. As others suggest, you won't look back.

At first I thought the color gripes were a little silly but Guitarpima actually has a legitimate need for them and although I don't sweat that stuff at the moment (but do like the new options in X3) I think for his sake and those with similar needs it would be really cool of Cake to keep expanding those options. It is an accessibility issue and I worry about similar complications in my future. Cheers.

I don't know why guitarpima hates the UI so much but it is possible the color scheme would be horrible for people who are colorblind. The new color options are very pale witb little contrast. To a colorblind person they may all look alike. I like the UI, personally.

The comping is outstanding, but you have to unlearn how it worked in X2. Many users mention stability, but X3's response seems snappier to me...more sports car, less sedan.

There's a minor change to how scrolling works that some users found annoying when it was first released. It doesn't impact me negatively at all, but just letting you know it's there. You should be able to download the trial first if you are worried. IMHO, it's a no brainer to get X3e Producer. Best one yet.

That's exactly it. Lack of contrast. The other thing is even though it may not seem so to most of you, to me, it's like staring at a light. I use a high contrast theme for my OS theme with a black background and white fonts. 8.5 was the last of the best UI Sonar had.

But since this thread is specifically about moving from X2 to X3, I'd imagine the ability to color tracks/channels can only be considered a positive. Ironically, the one change I'd personally like to see in this department is in the opposite direction - darker/black track strips.

Thanks to all for your $.02. I suspected as much (for those keeping score it was pretty much unanimous in favor of upgrading)but just wanted to look before I lept. To the color scheme dilema, I wish you luck in your quest, but that is the least of my concerns at this point. One more question: Addictive Drums, how intuitive is that? I was getting the hang of Session Drummer, does AD replace it , or is it in addition to SD? I am looking forward to upgrading this weekend, but not if Addictive Drums is difficult to work with, or replaces SD3. Tim

You get AD in addition to SD. There might be a bit of a learning curve but IMO you will find AD much better than SD.

It's one of those programs where you can just dial up kits and beats, or go super-deep if you want to warp things. I still use SD3 for some applications. I prefer Battery for the heavily electronic stuff, although with AD's effects you can edit drum sounds to be completely different compared to what you'd expect from acoustic drums.

Thanks guys. I personally think that AD looks like a powerful tool from the specs, I just didn't want to abandon session drummer, 1) because I am comfortable with it, 2) I have a bunch of extra drum sounds I haven't really used, 3) I only have so much time, and when I'm on a roll I have to CAPTURE what I'm doing before it's gone, learning new gear has to be delegated to "down time". Hey Craig, I recently took my old Alesis HR-16 and put it in the garage along with a copy of your book on it.(it's my new "drummer" for my guitar students, I'm trying to get them in a "School of Rock" kind of frame of mind). I don't think I have ever got more mileage out of a manual supplement than I did from the "Complete Guide to the HR-16 and MMT-8". It gave me the foundation for all of the MIDI and sequencing I have done over the years, THANKS! Tim
