This can also be done in PRV with both Volume ( CC7 ) Expresion ( CC10 ) and Velocity.
I use velocity most times as it's more natural as the timber also will change on most instruments.
This results in most sounds going from soft to harsh.
In other words it's more natural to hit, strum, bow or blow harder or softer an instrument to create dynamics than to turn a volume up and down.
Velocity is super easy to edit in PRV. And it can be done note by note, in groups or the whole track.
I have my set benchmarks for my "band". As example all Kick and bass notes are 110. Any quick doubles or accents might be dropped down to 100. As in a the second note might be played softer.
Hi Hat patterns are like that as well I noticed from playing them on my DTX kit, second note is always softer when playing 1/8 patterns.
Organs don't have velocity in the real world so they DO use a Volume pedal so this is one instrument I use volume on. SO I use a CC 7 lane and draw it out in PVR.
There's one big reason to avoid using Sonars envelopes with midi that many are just finding out... This will not transfer to another DAW. But CC events are universal. For the last few years I always save my projects as MIDI 1 files and for this I am keeping the midi part of my projects GM compatible.
