mp3 convertor

It seems that sonar 8 studio does not come with an mp3 convertor.  Do any of you know of a good, preferably free program that will do the job.  I thought that windows media player would do it but apparently not.

Technically Audacity and Goldwave (and maybe CDEX, too, I don't know I've never used it) don't have mp3 encoders in them either, at least not the last time I downloaded and used them.  you still have to have LAME downloaded and installed where Audacity and Goldwave can find it and then it uses LAME seamlessly as long as it's installed on your system for them to find.

Ah, yes. I forgot I had to download the Lame Encoder for Audacity. It was very easy to do. The first time I tried to convert a wav to mp3 Audacity prompted me to browse to where I had installed Lame for Audacity. http://audacity.sourcefor...q?i=lame-mp3&s=install

This question has never been asked before.

    Use the LAME encoder.

My personal experience with Audacity/LAME is that they make horrible quality MP3s.  Could be some setting somewhere that I'm not aware of, but I found a website that converts MP3s with as high or low quality as you prefer.  http://media.io is the website.

Not to say that Audacity is a bad program.  I still use it to double check my levels after mastering a project.  For monitoring, it's great.  But I would suggest using media.io for making mp3s.

    Cheers,
    Reid

sonar uses lame as well (if you purchase their mp3 encoder or use it during the trial).

and Chappel - I had not installed audacity or goldwave on my new machine (I've had it for what, 6 months?), and I found a need for it just today, so I downloaded it and tried to encode an mp3 and it asked if I wanted to download LAME and when I clicked YES, it downloaded it and installed it for me, so it was very painless and very convenient as opposed to the way it was when I first downloaded audicty and goldwave.

Somehow I ended up with Fraunnhofer. I still using a very old version of CoolEdit 2000 which had me load the Fraunnhofer long ago. There are free converters offered here:

I use digital Media converter Pro for everything else. costs a little but is terrific.

Are Lame and Fraunnhofer different? Have no idea.

John6528, you added a period to that URL you posted which makes it invalid. Here it is without the extra character. http://www.mp3-converter....raunhofer_encoders.htm
