mp3 import crashes Sonar (any version 8, 8.5, X1... all Producer editions)

No matter whether I am using 8, 8.5, or X1 and no matter if it's 32-bit or 64-bit, if I import or attempt to import an mp3 into an audio track Sonar gives a fatal error.  In order to restart Sonar from this point I usually have to end a specific task in Windows' task manager or logoff and log back in.

What gives?

any help is appreciated.

Wow-on all those versions. Not much help but I do this all the time onm 853 and X1a,b,c-both producer. Never an issue.
Do you have anything set up to decode (whatever the term is) an mp3? I do, so I don't know if that's the difference.
    Sorry couldn't be more help.

I'm not sure what you mean by decode.  This used to not be a problem whatsoever but I guess something on my workstation got installed at some point and then it became a conflict...I'm guessing with Sonar which must be why it no longer accepts mp3's.  Cakewalk support said that it's probably due to VBR on the mp3's i'm trying to import but even if I encode the mp3 myself in iTunes and try to reimport it crashes.

The only workaround I have is to convert the mp3 to WAV and then import.  This duplicates WAV files all over my computer though and I know I've lost precious hard disk real estate because of this issue.

    "A fatal error has occured."
    "Module: C:\Program Files (x86)\Pinnacle\Shared Files\Filter\PcleAudioCodec.ax"

"A crash dump file has been created here:......"

    "Exception code: c0000005"
    "Address: 16ECB3AC:19A1EEA0:19A1ED60"
"As a result of this error SONAR is about to exit abnormally.  Should SONAR attempt to save a recovery copy of your work?"

Well I disabled the file listed above by renaming the extension to ".old" and now I can import mp3 files again without a problem.  I don't even remember what the Pinnacle software came from.  I have tons of stuff installed on my workstation due to various needs I have had over the years but maybe it's time I clean out some stuff.

P.S. Thanks for your help since you pointed out that you aren't experiencing a problem.  This meant that it was exclusive to my system build.  And thus I was able to narrow it down with Sonar's feedback window upon crashing.

I can tell you this: there are a zillion links for PcleAudioCodec.ax" errors. If it were me I would research that to start.

Unfortunately, googling any DLL filename results in hundreds of bogus sites that want to sell you (usually fake) diagnostic and spyware-removal applications. Better to go to the vendor's website first to identify what the file is, if it's necessary, and if there is an updated version for it.

Just guessing, I'd guess the file in question is a codec you probably downloaded somewhere along the line, perhaps when WMP prompted you with an option to search online for a missing codec.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

How far back did you start to experience this problem?

If you can remember an approximate date when it was working correctly, an alternative is to use Windows System Restore to roll back to a system restore point when mp3 importing was working for you.

Hardly anyone lists their system specs anymore, so I'm guessing you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7. Windows XP's system restore feature is bad (in my experience) , so I wouldn't try using system restore, if you are running Windows XP. However, System Retore is greatly improved for Vista and Windows 7.

    Hope this helps.

That's true Bit, But it also gives you the places to look, like the vendors site, explains what it is, explains how it could have been downloaded, etc, etc.

    Agreed Stratman70...

I owned a Pinicle TV card for about 2 days, before I took it back. From what I remember it installed all sorts of crap and left it there when it was "uninstalled". I also remember in the back of my head that Pinicle provided a clean up utility you could download from somewhere....

    Then there's also ccCleaner.

.... and nothing beats a complete OS reinstall if your machine is that messy!

    Cheers.
