msvcr71 dll deletefile failed: code 5

Hi...just installing X3. Got this message about msvcr71 dll file not able to be installed...access denied. I read where skipping should be okay, but it did caused BSOD for another person.

Any others experienced this error when installing X3? I have X2 - and X1 still on my system.

I installed with Admin permission.

thanks

turn off antivirus and run the install program as an administrator.

Thanks for the reply Arvid...umm, did that in the first instance. Everything seems to be working okay, except that the VST 3's aren't showing with the VST 2's, in the side box where the synths/audio is kept. This should show Melodyne/Ozone like in the ads for X3, however the VST3 does show up in the 'insert audio' right click....if that makes any sense? I might start another thread for this one.

It may not be a permissions issue, despite the "access denied" message. More likely, the DLL is in use by another process. That's why the standard instructions for software installs usually start with the advice to reboot and shut down everything that's not needed. As noted by swamptooth, that includes anti-virus programs. Unfortunately, this particular file is common to many, many applications and services.

If all else fails, there are free utilities available for determining which process has a particular file locked. One that I've used is called Unlocker. With a little patience, you can also locate open files with Process Explorer.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks bitflipper. I downloaded Unlocker and installed it. If X3 becomes unstable I'll try reinstalling it and use the unlock should the same issue occur again. I did a search for the file and windows found...45 dll's. One of them was associated with Adobe Updater. I'm thinking that I would need to do a trial and error process of unlocking each one before finding the culprit...but yes, closing as many unneeded programs first would be vital and hopefully minimize such a lengthy process.

    Cheers
