multiple step sequencer patterns

I'm trying to get my head around the step sequencer but I'm getting a bit confused. What happens if I want to create a 2 bar snare loop, but later on in the song I want to do a snare roll on the same track? I can't seem to create multiple step sequences on one track, if I copy and paste the sequence I have created and move it later in the track and then edit it, it also edits the original sequence. Also, I've tried to place the curser in the middle of the track and then attempted to create a new step sequence but it just wont let me.

I'm used to these things having patterns so that I can create 1 bar on one pattern and then use automation to change to pattern 2 which has an adjusted version of the original loop on it. X1's step sequencer doesn't seem to have that feature.

The only workaround I have found is create a new midi track, input the new sequence on this, 'convert to step sequence' and then move that onto the original midi track in the position that I want it. It's not ideal though.

You can create as many step sequencer "clips" on one teack as you need. You can do it measure by measure if you like!
I don't know the shortcut keys, but wherever you have your cursor and open the step sequencer it will create a new step sequencer clip. Your old ones remain, so you will just have many!

Thanks for your reply. That's really weird because i tried doing exactly that last night but I couldn't get it to work! I'll need to have a play about with it and see if I can get it working

I can't seem to create multiple step sequences on one track, if I copy and paste the sequence I have created and move it later in the track and then edit it, it also edits the original sequence.

By default, a newly copied clip is linked back to the original clip. Editing it will also change the original. To prevent this, right click on the new clip and select 'Unlink step sequencer clip'.

Also, I've tried to place the curser in the middle of the track and then attempted to create a new step sequence but it just wont let me.

You can do this by adding a new midi track, and set the midi output to session drummer (or to the same midi output as the existing midi drums track). You can then build 2 patterns that run independently.

toximornot, that's great! what you have suggested works. There still does seem to be a bug though where if you try and input a new sequence and copy and paste from the orginal sequence, the notes aren't rendered. You seem to have to put them in manually. Nevermind, at least I have a work around now!
