my new used bass

Once again I'm utterly stymied trying to post pics here. But, in any event, here's a link to pics of my new bass, a Carvin I got on ebay:

http://www.carvinbbs.com/viewtopic.php?t=10370

This is a terrific instrument, my first 5 string, and I wanted to share it with my friends here too.

Looks nice. I always thought neck-thru's look cool, though I've never owned one.

Hey that's a really nice looking bass. I have a Fender P-bass from about 2000 and I seldom use it. I've never understood how people could buy an instrument off ebay without having the luxury of playing it first. Know what I mean? I'm actually curious as to what you guys do to make sure you get a quality instrument...

A buddy of mine bought a used Paul Reed Smith (PRS) guitar off of eBay and that thing is amazing! Beautiful too.

    Thanks.

That looks great Mark - hope you got a bargain mate!

Just out of interest, what do you tune the extra string to? Is it tuned like the second string on a guitar to B, I think I'd be tempted to tune it to a C.

Kiss - I agree, it iscertainly taking achance, and it's my first ebay purchase, so I was apprehensive. However, I've talked to quite a lot of people who have bought instruments on ebay with considerable success. In this case it worked out great.

Steve - I tune it to B, I imagine that's traditional, like a guitar. And I did get a terrific bargain. Brand new this bass is more than $1200, add the hardshell case and the little practice amp that came with it........it was a steal at $600! My hands aren't that big, so the extra string saves me a stretch on some tunes. I'm jazzed!

Nice bass. I had a Carvin Bass & 6-String Double Neck, pearl white. It was very nice. I regret ever selling that thing but I could say that about a good number of guitars over the years. Nice addition to your toolbox!

    Take care,

I have a friend who's bought a bunch of guitars on e-bay. It's always a moment of excitement when they arrive. I think his philosophy is that, with the money he saves overall, even if he occasionally gets stuck with an instrument he's unhappy with he's still coming out ahead in the long run.

And sure beats spending time at a GC!

ROFL, I agree! Everytime I go into that place I leave with nothing but disappointment. And what's even worse is that Guitar Center seems to only be hiring young teenager kids with zero experience instead of qualified well-trained musicians. Tsk tsk...

Anyway, I'd like to get my hands on a Paul Reed Smith (PRS) guitar pretty soon. Those things just play so well!

Well, thanks for the tip, Mark. I'm kind of embarrassed to have bought a 5 string without ever having played one, and to have assumed that the extra string is higher. I might find it more useful to tune EADGB, since my mindset is that of a longtime guitarist. So you're saying it's usually tuned BEADG?

Yes. Some players will get heavy strings and go lower. The guy in Korn probably does that.

James, the one time I tried that it worked, I copied it from the Discotheque and pasted it here. I tried copying it from the Carvin site and pasting it here, as you suggested, between the image markers, but to no avail. I copy, but when I right click here, Paste is not among the options; it's grayed out. C'est la vie

Holy Toledo! Jessie it's good to see you in these parts again, we've missed you.
By the way, I nearly followed one of your suggestions while replacing some pups in a cheap yard sale Epi LP. You had recommended the Seymour Duncan '59 reissue in the neck and the JB in the bridge. I did the latter but put the Jazz pickup in the neck. My cheap used yard sale guitar now sounds fantastic! I couldn't be happier with it. It SCREAMS! Thanks for the advice.

A nice bass is a thing of beauty. Congratulations on your purchase!

The main reason that I got a five-string is that I've always felt that low E just isn't low enough. Sometimes it's nice to walk down and keep walking. If you tune it to B, it allows you to do the same patterns as on the other strings, which makes improv a breeze. I've heard of guys tuning a four-string as B-E-A-D, and was thinking about it, then decided to just go for a five-string. Glad I did! I do have to admit that the first couple of times I jammed with people I ended up hitting the wrong strings, since there was an extra one in the mix. Now that I'm used to it, I'd probably have trouble going back to a four-string. Plus, I'd miss that big, beefy B.

I have several friends that play Carvins and they love them. You got a very nice instument there! The fact that you bought it without playing it first just kind of goes along with the Carvin philosophy, you know it will be good if it says Carvin on the headstock. I don't have one myself but if one of you would like to give me one feel free to PM me.

    BTW: Jessie, Welcome back!

FWIW, That's because kids (living at home) are the only ones who can afford to work at GC or SamAsh.

Ironically, I actually like our local GC.
They set me up to checkout whatever piece I'm interested in... and leave me alone until I'm ready to buy or leave.
I typically like to go in on a Sunday... which cuts down on the "background noise".

In Columbus, Saturday seems to be THE day for young shredders.
In particular, I like checking out basses (call it a hobby as I'm not a real bass player)... and GC moved the upper-tier basses into one of the practice rooms at the back of the store. Absolutely perfect!

I can see the advantage of tuning a higher string to C because it would keep the octaves two strings and two frets apart, but the lower tuning would sound great I reckon.
