some plug ins are able to be automated and some are not.... use envelopes on those that are.  enable the WRITE function (if you can't find a write function in the plug that means it likely can't be automated.) and then make the adjustments as the playback is happening or add nodes to the envelope and edit them.

I don't automate EQ so I'm guessing..... but I have seen the "W" in some of the plugs which indicates the WRITE function is available.

The OP says he's familiar with automating - just not with automating EQ.

I've never actually done it, but a few guesses:

-In some EQs the curve can be adjusted with sliders, I assume these siders are automatable.

-ClipFX with fixed setting is one way, unless it makes the change too sudden.

-Using a Send and automating the amount of it could be one way.

    - Using a separate track with an EQ with different settings and cross fading between the main track

i believe i found this answer

made a guitar buss, pushed alt-f3 for the mixer pane.

enabled the track eq for the buss, which is sonitus eq.

    then back to track pane

right clicked inside the bus track and made bus eq envelopes for band 2 Q, freq, enable and gain. now i have automation via envelopes on that band which i can roll around anywhere i want......interesting.....

now this is the only way i've ever done automation. I've never seen the way you push play and automated with this "write" function, but i understand the concept...

With many controls (sliders, knobs) you can right click them and enable Automation Write Enable. Then any changes you make while playing the project will be recorded. Don't forget to disable Automation Write Enable when finished.

Man,Ive been looking for this answer too.Gotta try that out.

For what reason do you wanna use this eq? suppose its useful for setting back the mids on a guitar during vocals and then bring em back out during solo parts?

just clik the little "W" in the sonitus eq and anything you do is recorded. Sort of a cool way to bring life to a sagging mix:)

I used to use the click play and move the faders...... buy I stopped doing that.  It was too sloppy and not very accurate.

Now... I click W..hit play, touch the fader or pan.. hit stop..... save the project... click the W off, and then...... I place my nodes on the envelope manually, zooming in as needed to place them surgically. The accuracy is spot on this way. Much sweeter.

i got this to work, but i have to point out that there is no "w" on sonitus eq..unless i'm blind, which i dont think i am, i know i'm deaf as you can tell by my posts, but.....lol....

this is what i did : right click on your effect in the effect bin, click "arm parameter," then click "arm all."  then go ahead and open the effect, it will say "armed" up top. now you can hit the little automation button on your toolbar and anything you do will show up in the track view.. its so cool. i have been looking forward to this knowledge for a long time. works for about all effects that i have tried....

but the main reason for the interest was ducking mids while vocals are going....

I avoid the Sonitus EQ when I want automation on EQ.  I have known it to produce a "click" sound at the start of any change to the frequency settings.  I believe that some other users have observed this too.

Automated EQ is also useful for de-essing without a de-esser. Apply a low pass on Ss and Ts sounds. Activate it on those clips. Alternatively you can just apply clip EQ.

I just tested that out, and in my case. i hear no clicks...thank goodness...I'd be ticked.

so which one do you use for automation?

The W is clearly visible at the top right of the screen.

I've automated the Sonitus with great results over the years, no clicking here at all.

See, up here in the north, we cant go and buy every new version of sonar to enjoy the fruits of its upgrades....we have to pay for "natural gas" to heat our homes at a whooping $300.00 a month.  So , No snake to bite me here :) see my signature below

Another automated EQ technique that gets used a lot in metal productions is to setup a low pass filter on the mixbus and pull it all the way to the left.  Now automate it at the start of the song so it swells from pure low fequency mush to full range glory on the downbeat/band entry.

    Geat tip Dave!

And I imagine if you stack 2 (or more) of them on top of each other, set to the same Q & Freq, the cutoff will be even more pronounced.

Just listen out for any distortion artifacts!

Clicking doesn't necessarily always occur in every situation when automating the Sonitus EQ.  When it did happen for me, it wasn't prominent and went unnoticed at first.  I only identified the cause much later, after another user pointed out the problem here.
