need cheap, light amp

Group of us do non-profit (no money) presentations/lectures. Right now using someone's old Yamaha tuner for an amp. Music/sound comes from my laptop and old tape recorder to an old simple mixer to the amp to the fairly decent, donated speakers.

The tuner is 1995 vintage and failing fast. The weight of the tuner is a primary complaint. Stuff is hauled around in a large bag.

Are there any cheaper amps that only need to drive two speakers?

A small cart with wheels may serve your more immediate needs.

Amps tend to weigh exactly what they need to, to do what ever you need to do.

Maybe you can get a cart and fresh home stereo amp for $10 at a thrift store?

Home stereo stuff tends to not be very road worthy. Your best bang for the buck these days is a powered speaker. I had a chance to use a 10" Beghringer powered speaker as a monitor the other day, it was surprisingly good. Just by 20 of them for bigger gigs! :)

Yes, active speakers are a good choice.
Lightweight amplifiers are either low wattage (not exactly what you want) or class D (modern amps that work like a switching power supply). Calss D amplifiers are used in some active speakers. Class D amplifiers may still be more expensive than conventional amps. The prices will come down...
The Peavey IPR series is an example. You get e.g. 2 x 515 W (RMS) into 4 Ohms, and the weight is 7 lbs.

Sorry.  I don't know your budget, but this is something we use at work for presentations: GoSpeak!  .  It's very light, portable and self contained. It sounds pretty good too.

I have put out a plea for powered speakers... no takers yet. Everything is donated. Searched some pawn shops but their prices are out of control.
