need to convert sonar project to protools DAW
I've been tracking in home studio on PC with Sonar X1. Need to take my project to pro studio in town and lay drum tracks and do some mixing. Pro Studio is using pro tools on Mac. Ive read about Solid State Logic's Pro Convert being able to switch projects between different DAWs as well as PC to Mac but at $600 a little out of my reach. Are there any other options for me out there?

I would just save as a new project, bounce all your tracks to one clip per track and then drag the beginning of all tracks so they all start on the same downbeat. Then hit control A (selecting all tracks) and export. On export, select tracks instead of entire mix on the export options, and then choose what effects, automation etc. you want to be carried out in the export. Lance

Save it as an OMF file. Please make sure you get the OMF converter for pro tools. OMF stands for Open Media Format and the converter may rob you of about $500 smackers.

Lance What I'd really like to know...is how to go the other way. (i.e. export tracks from ProTools so I can drop them into SONAR.)

Consolidate tracks- In pro tools select/highlight the clips you want, and then hit something like edit or region on the top menus and click consolidate region. Then ion the right in pro tools, you click on the little menu thing that is so hard to find lol, and click export something mumbo jumbo- You can export to its own folder on your desktop or wherever you like. Sorry, harder to explain and remember the exact names than doing it hands on. If you Google pro tools consolidate tracks, you will get the answers you need to do that. When you learn how to do it, it is really easy! The effects do not go with the clips though ! Lance

OMF files dont work that well in PT 9 - hence the PT 10 plug that they are now supported properly I have had some limited sucess moving files in OMF form over to Pro Tools just take note of this: Fade ins and Fade outs can crash the OMF file creation process with a strange error message. if the file wont export to OMF it is probably a "fade" - this can be only 1 fade on 1 track causing the problem.... try it first -if it stalls then take fades off tracks (save to new file before doing this and kill the file later). OMF: you will geta an error saying that the timecode is "off" in PT upon import (PT9) I ignored this and just hit Ok and it worked out -OMF files can do some weird things to automation information so you may have to check things and clear "ghost" automation settings - not a biggie Best way: WAV mix down stems of each group of instuments to wav files and make sure they start at the beginning of the song start position : i rewind to start and record enable any track I am exporting and record silence from start that way you cannot screw it up, as well put the Tempo of the song in the filename and the sample rate as well (44.1) - the bit rate will not affect the process i try to keep mine at 24 but I am pretty sure its ok to have 16 and 14 side by side in a file. good luck

The way to go from PT to Sonar: PT, Logic, and other apps use a 1 hour SMPTE offset, 01.00.00.00, while Sonar uses 00.00.00.00 so importing a wav file that begins at 00.00.00.00 in Logic will appear at the 1 hour mark, 01.00.00.00, in Sonar. If you want your timestamped wavs to show up properly you should leave "Always Import Broadcast Waves At Their Timestamp" checked in Global Options/Audio Data and also check "Apply SMMPTE Offset To Broadcast Wave Timestamps." Now, in Project Options/Clock, change the SMPTE/MTC offset to 01.00.00.00 and your files will show up where you want them.

I just slip edit the clips to where I want them all to start, no need to record silence. Lance

Hi Billshow , I have to do this sonar>pro tools drill all the time , as I write /demo songs in sonar , send them to my drummer who works in cubase , and then finally on to the actual album session in protools . As the others in this thread described , I do the export tracks function - sometimes as stems , or sometimes as individual tracks depending on the situation. The important thing is to have the the selection of what you want to export = across the whole shebang of the timeline - all the way from the dead start to the end of the song ; so that all files render "from zero" . Its foolproof that way. Also , save your project as a type 0 midi file . You only need one midi track with even the simplest of midi info . This will save ALL your grid - every last meter /time signature , tempo changes , markers , etc etc etc . Then import this midi track into pro tools/cubase/ whatever DAW - FIRST , before anything else. This will establish your familiar grid - tempo map , time signatures , bar lines ,even your markers . THEN import all your audio tracks and VOILA ! you will be looking at your project - perfectly locked on the grid in Pro Tools. If you do this right - and dont let anybody screw up your midi-grid , you can keep the same project grid from the start of a songs life until final stages of completion - wherever your song may journey to the ends of the earth. I learned this because I was tired of never being able to keep or recapture those once in-a-liftime random moments from the early stages of the song demos - where one just throws up a mic and goes for it while the idea is fresh . Now, I can keep all the irreplaceable inspirational moments of my song - safely in one project all the way till its mix time , no matter how many DAW's it has to travel to. I even keep original scratch tracks sometimes - you never know when those might prove useful - hard drive space is dirt cheap these days. Interestingly enough , I always liberally put markers EVERYWHERE through my songs in Sonar - verses, choruses ,bridges , breaks, guitar leads , vox landmarks ,time changes , etc etc - and it is silly fun to then see them on our Producer- Neil kernon's s Pro Tools screen. Hope that helps somewhat , Cheers ! K
