Loved this one! Sat here playing my guitar to it over and over! Hahaha! Great job, Tom! That unexpected Eb is soooo cool!

Tom,

Very cool. An EDM instramental groove number with  some tasty improv sections.  The keyboard & GTR playing are strong. Good segues.

Yeah, me likey,

Thanks again all of 'yall. I feel the need to revisit and make the drums even less "loop house" in a few spots.

Bert, thanks, glad you liked it, I'm glad the segues work for you 'cause it's kind of a kitchen-sink type deal . . .

Danny, you are totally welcome and enjoy the jam, I'm flattered because you are an excellent g-man indeed. And when in doubt, two extra bars of Eb, that's my go-to.  :)

But wait, there's more!!!

Hey Mike in FL, you are right it was a lot of fun, I like to forget about the rules of songwriting and just take liberties instead - indulgent as hell and not everyone will appreciate it . . . thanks!

BassJoker Steve, thanks, the groove is for me 90% of songwriting or why I enjoy songs. I should have been a drummer maybe . . .

Kerry, you rock, thanks! See you at the movies . . .

JQ Screed, thanks for not being bored and appreciating it - yep I'm a keyboard player but I play bass on t.v.

Wookiee, thanks much! I hope I'm moving a little down on the "blast your ears off" scale of loudness? I'm not there yet but it's a goal!

GusRogers, thanks man, glad you dug it, much obliged . . .

On a side note, there was a time when I was thinking of changing my last name to *David Occupant* so that I'd get more mail.

I Thank your thanks Emerald....and feel ya on the groove/drummer thing.....If ya got the groove in your move and the pep in your step...sometimes its hard not to wanna think about bangin on a drum now n then....though I have none...so once awhile try that acoustic guitar whackin' style...but not really decent at it ...lol

Sounds real good, Tom! I listened twice. Like it a lot. I like the drums and overall production. Keyboards throughout? Even guitar? You never know these days. I listened with ear buds.

Love it. The bass line kept me warm all through the song. The sections are perfect length. Keeping me wondering whats next, but still not bored by current part!

Great work!

Nice tune,
The five minutes are going with no effort( in fact I didn't even notice it until I read it)
I like the percussion samples in the introduction .
The bass is amazing .
Nothing to add on the technical point...
Thanks for sharing.
Olivier.

Re: new original "Participant" 2016/08/19 10:26:56 (permalink)
Thanks for the super cool comments!

I agree with you Larry Alex the intro does drag on too long. I try to find a good place to truncate it but then that voice in my head pops up, "Why?" because I realize I'm not shooting for the 3:30 single AND I've invested in all this computer crapola so why not please myself and be criminally indulgent with arrangement length? Oh, yeah, and call it "art" . . . that's the most important rationalization.  :)

But I agree, it's too long, the listener sadly suffers.

As for melodies, I think they come later in the tune but for most tunes like this, you might think of what the bass is doing as a kind of melody that holds the thing together. That said, no one is going to croon to "Participant." I pictured it as more of a song you'd play while tearing up the curves on a long road trip you would take in a car like this:

whereas my real life is decidedly more this:

And as I'm getting some compliments on my guitar playing, it's time to reiterate the full disclosure from post #10: I do play real guitar in fits and spurts,  but in this song, every bit of the guitar is me playing it on the keyboard, using Orangetree's Dracus. Pretty convincing stuff methinks but please don't think of me as a guitar slinger like many other legit players around here . . .

sorry for the long wind, and thanks again!

Tasty! Lots of signature "Tom" bass and pianos/EPs, and jazzy chord changes. I don't think it's too long at all, for the genre.

Also, that lead guitar synth impressed me. I did not guess that it was a synth until I saw your comment above. I'm going to have to put Orange Tree Dracus Evolution on my buy list when I can find some cash to spare for more synth stuff.

Tom,
I'm just getting acclimated to you and your music.
Love the EP in this (cool riffs going on there).  Nice mix (but I'm on cans at work so...)

The guitar (or as some call it "keytar") solo is  nice.  Like that alot.

You are definitely a master of groove... Gotta love how from the opening bar, my head/foot was moving.
Good stuff.
