new song - Berklee class project
I recently took the home studio production class on-line at Berklee. Great experience, with a lot of the value coming from the input and contribution from the rest of the class which was spread out from Boston to Moscow. Probably not as good as a live class would have been but I really didn't have the choice. Furthermore, my "band" was also on-line and I solicited tracks from friends who were also all over. No one ever met in person, I'd post an updated main track and someone would record their track and upload it for me. Worked out quite well. The downside is that there wasn't any direct feedback so I couldn't nudge people towards what I wanted. But the upside of that is I got some good creativity without constraining people's ideas. The end result, which I made a video for, can be found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bNgq97_lt0 I used Sonar X1 Producer & added Ozone for mastering Love any comments - while this song is pretty well "baked" I'm planning on doing more using this process & tools.

This is a fine song, however, the mix doesn't work for me. It's muddy on my monitors meaning that it's overloaded with mids, or, too many vocals and instruments occupying the same frequency spectrum vying for attention. Try scooping out some of the midrange either on individual tracks or on the entire mix during mastering. Also, some things were either recorded in a place with too much reflections, or too much reverb was used. Otherwise, it's a good song, and I hope you don't consider this a final product.

I agree with Lynn there and during the vocal harmonies the lead voice seem to get a little lost in the total singing volume.

I kinda like it all...
Nice job on the project.
That.... not being able to give "course corrections" during the process is one of the downsides to long distance collabs. Especially when the work is Gratis. It bugs me too but.... gotta do what you gotta do.

I agree with the others. This is a good tune and the playing/singing and mix is mostly good. But the lead does seem to get buried sometimes. Try putting everything but the lead vocal through a sub main bus and then reduce the mids. I find it helpful to put an analyzer on the vocal track so I can watch to see the freqs that it is using and then reduce those freqs on the other tracks.

agree with all of the above. electric distorted guitar and clean male vocals is the the hardest combo to mix. get those guitars panned away and cut some mids during the vocal parts. love the vid and the song! a nice modern take on a familiar genre, you have some talent!
