newbie issue inserting soft synth
I feel like I should be able to figure this out...but....so far I can't. How do I insert the Native Instruments piano (New York Concert Grand, etc) that I've bought? All I can find as something under Tools/Options/VST that seems to add a path . . . but it doesn't seem to work. Strangely, I can't find anything about this in either the Cakewalk book or Craig Anderton's excellent book. So...it's got to be obvious...right?? Thanks!

Did you make Cakewalk search for it once you installed it?

as dave mentions, you must tell SHS where to scan for the new VST. OPTIONS>GLOBAL>VST PLUGINS. add the folder where NI Piano was installed to the VST Scan Folder list, then click on SCAN VST FOLDERS. after that, it should be available for you to insert using INSERT>SOFTSYNTH

Thanks! Actually, I'd done that--Global/VST plugins--and had Cakewalk search, but nothing new appeared on the soft-synth list when I later tried to insert a ....but now I"m wondering if the NI install was OK...so I'm installing another of their instruments to try. I am pretty amazed at the near-total lack of documentation or help of any sort from NI---guess you're supposed to just know.....(and eventually I will) Thanks again.

but did you add the folder to the scan list where NI was installed? you have to do that first. NI doesn't install normally in the default VST folder list where cakewalk VSTs get installed, so you have to add the folder to the scan list. let me see - it's PROBABLY in the C:\Program Files\Native Instruments\[something] folder.

Further help (if possible) needed. OK...I have apparently successfully installed 2 NI instruments--NY Concert Grand and Upright Piano. I thought they might be more 'findable' if I put them in the VST folder, so that's where they are---is that OK? I then have HS scan for plugins, and it doesn't appear to find them. I know that his shouldn't be so difficult, so I'm thinking that I must be missing some very obvious step.... I have not installed NI's Kontakt Player since I assume it's a stand-alone player. I say 'assume' since NI provides no shred of help--but I'm assuming here that just installing the actual instruments is enough. Any observations would be most appreciated. Thanks!

no, I think you need the kontakt player also. i think that's the kontakt engine and that is proabably why sonar can't find it. you can't just install the instruments - that's just the sound library, and without a way to load the sound libraries you can't use them. the vst scanner needs to find a dll file.

Thanks. That's actually what I was thinking but, hey, I wasn't born know this and NI's documentation never quite mentioned it. Guess I should have figured out that since it was included . . . That's great help. Thanks for taking time.
