no audio input using tascam 1884

Hi,
I'm newbie to Sonar, I have X1 producer, love it.
Using with tascam 1884, pc is pentium 4 (next upgrade) with TI firewire card, axiom 61 controller, shure, etc mics.

PC recognizes tascam 1884 and fully installed with 1.6 driver. Axiom controller using midi in/out works great with tascam and x1 on midi tracks/soft synth tracks.

I'm just using PC's soundcard for X1 monitoring right now, X1 recognizes and outputs to it just fine.  I'm outputing tracks to master, master outputs to soundcard line out.

Audio tracks with output from tascam don't work.  Using a mic, on 1884 I have mic input signal, master output signal and monitor headphones output (good on any mic input, for example I'm using #1).  trim is up to near max but not overload on 1884.  1884 master output shows signal about -10db.

on X1, when I add an audio track and set input to 1884 input 1/2 (left or stereo), I get no signal on X1.  track output is set to master, but I also tried directly to soundcard.  nothing, no bars on LED's.

Any help would be appreciated.  tommic

Why would you not use the FW-1884, for the monitoring? Multiple sound cards are, in my experience, a bad thing. On my setup, I have the on-board sound disabled and the 1884 is the only thing running ...and it runs SMOOTH.

Current version of the drive is 1.8 ( http://www.tascam.de/en/downloads/archive/FW-1884 )

Did you install the Sonar plug-in by chance? It is on the link above. Not sure if you do that for X1 - mine was migrated from 8.5.3

I am assuming you armed the track and have input echo on (if you have effects)? Also, is the master up? You should have left/stereo/right as options as well.

If you are getting signal on the unit, then you have to look at your pc and how it is setup, and setup with x1. You have the soft lcd utility that shows if you are connected - does it in fact show as connected?

    Let me know....

Do you have the Tascam drives listed on the Preferences>Audio in X?

Hi, thanks for taking the time.
thanks for input on soundcard, good to know.  currently just trying to get up and running.

track is armed (ready to record), no effects, master on (working for soft synths) and up, I have choices for left/right/stereo for each pair (1/2, 3/4, etc).

softlcd shows connected and I have active 1884 control panel.  X1 gives project re-route dialog if 1884 is not connected, so 1884 is recognized.  X1 calls it FW-1884 FE-8 WDM (9 in, 9 out), but I just have basic 1884, no expander.

Under Preferences/Audio/Devices, 1884 analog pairs are listed under inputs and outputs.
Under Preferences/Driver Setting, 1884 is playback timing master.
Under Preferences/Playback and Recording, driver mode is WDM/KS

Also, transport controls don't work.  So, actually, only MIDI is working on 1884.  I saw from another post that someone has 1884 fully working with windows XP (I have SP3) and X1, so it can be done.  I'm using 1.6 driver, another post suggested that for XP.

The Tascam 1884 should have no problem working with XP. In fact it may work even better because this device was originally built when XP was current and we have had issues getting them to update to later versions of Sonar and OS'es, Vista/Win7.
I suggest you use the FW-1884 as your Control Surface and sound card, thus you should completely disconnect your PC sound card. This means going into your BIOS and disable it.

Another thing to look at is to make sure in Sonar Input Echo is turned on for the track you have selected.

thanks for taking the time, I will disable the sound card, it's just the onboard hardware of the motherboard.

uninstalled the soundcard software, now when I open Sonar it says "Audio driver error, the following drivers do not support the audio format- FW 1884 Analog 1:2.  Contact Cakewalk Technical Support."

Did you update to version 1.8? Is your firmware the right version (I believe 1.83)? Did you try the soundcard as ASIO. And lastly, did you try that Sonar 1.22 file?

The softlcd sees the unit and you have have a dialogue box, hrrrmmmmmm.

Can you perhaps post a screenshot or two?
