no midi in?

Sonar 8, Focusrite Saffire midi in/out, vista with update.

Midi in (from keyboard) works with other sound modules but not with Sonar 8. What could that be?
Midi out does work from Sonar.

I also tried an old midiman 2x2 with the same results. It feels like I have something set up wrong in Sonar but I didn't change anything. Checked correctly in midi setup.

You said MIDI setup. Its MIDI Devices under options. See if you have the ports selected there.

I to have a midi issue sometimes, I am using usb though, when you open a new prodject or old before doing anything press acouple keys look at the task bar on bottom right of screen, see if the 2 little lights on the midi icon lights up when you depress keys, if so your midi is responding, then you have another problem more than likely its Sp8 then.. thats whats happening to mine...good luck

I seem to be missing the midi icon.

I keep a backup disk, a clone, that I re-do every 3 weeks or so. If I boot off the clone the midi works just dandy in sonar. So it's something I've done to sonar in the last 2-3 weeks. I have been dinging around with audio buffer sizes in sonar and Saffire because I was getting dropouts, clicks etc. Maybe I got rid of the clicks but also got rid of midi. I don't understand how they could be related though.

Anyway... I think the best course is to copy all the Sonar files from the backup to the current and see what happens. Hard to find EVERYTHING in vista though. If that doesn't work I'll uninstall sonar and start over. Be nice to know what happened though.

If I have this right. You can access MIDI when you use an older Sonar setup? In the new setup do you see the MIDI meters working when you hit a key?
This could be as simple as not having full user privileges in the new setup. Check what you account status is and if its the same as the old one.

The sonar setup on the backup is the same, sonar 8 etc. It's just 3 weeks older.
In the new setup the meter registers for midi out but not midi in.

So you have MIDI activity on the channels do you have MIDI going to a port? Do you have a way to see if its getting out of the the computer? I wonder if you have any ports at all for Sonar to use. Having MIDI activity is normal but it means nothing if it is in Sonar only.

You should see the MIDI meters on each channel jump if you hit a key or have an input of some MIDI data on that channel.

Midi out goes to saffire, midi in comes from saffire. Out works. In doesn't. If I boot from the backup disk everything still works fine.

So: I copied all the sonar/cakewalk files from the backup to the new drive. New drive still doesn't work. That means it's in the registry somewhere and that's beyond me.

    I copied from program files/cakewalk, program files/sonar 8, program data/cakewalk
Also anything under users that had the name cakewalk or sonar in it.

Still won't work so I'm going to uninstall and install again. It's really a pain.

First I installed over the the old one... that didn't work. Then uninstalled. Erased everything from disk and installed again then put the data back from backup. That worked and everything is working now. Wish I had just done that right away. I'd still like to know what was wrong.

    John,
I think you'll find this is just part of dealing with computers and software: sometimes something gets corrupted, and only a clean reinstall gets it back working properly.

I do have one suggestion though. You should be using a better backup procedure than what you described. You correctly pointed out that if the registry gets messed up, it's not something the layman whats to try and fix. So, what you need is an imaging program - a backup that will restore everything - registry too - so that you don't have to go through a complete reinstall of OS, programs, data... it's all done for you in one shot, in considerably less time.

I don't use Vista but I believe some versions have something like this feature built-in. If yours does not, consider getting Acronis True Image - easy to use, and costs about $40. Install this utility, do regular backups, and after any software problem, you'll never be more than 10-15 min away from a working system (or less if you keep a small C: partition).
