And then there are the stories of the 90 year old men and women that ate 4 slices of becan EVERY FRICKEN' DAY and never got cancer. Or the stories of the men and women who were vegetarians and still got cancer.
...

I'm not sure the bacon, or this or that is the issue ... I think it is all relative to the person/body and its ability to move food through it and work it. Ex: When I was playing tennis before my eye's surgeries, I weighed 225 and was able to play 5.0 competitions in doubles (too old for singles on that at the time at almost 50). Nowadays, because I do not play 2 sets or more per average A DAY. I weigh 280 and can not remove/lose the weight on the court, and walking is not enough. Bacon was not bad when I needed the fuel ... it might be bad, with the salt and all that AFTER, I can not longer burn the fuel.

I think, the rest is just crap and sales! Someone wants to sell you chicken and turkey instead! And they are really no better than red or green meat with their hundreds of chemicals in them! Your body still doesn't know how to work with all those chemicals!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

With all this widespread, massive consumption of bacon going on in this country, you would think that we would be facing a deadly epidemic of colon cancer. But guess what, the colon cancer death rate is in free fall! :
http://i1.wp.com/www.powerlineblog.com/ed-assets/2015/10/Colon-cancer-rates-copy.jpg

I think the age adjusted incidence of colon cancer (AACCDR) is more pertinent to this discussion (the quoted colon cancer death rate has been drastically reduced by the widespread use of colonoscopy) and the AACCDR has been gradually tracking down for decades - despite widespread consumption of bacon.

My personal experience with food (and or food additive) cancer scares goes back to the 1960's when we were told that the artificial sweetener cyclamate was a cancer risk. We later found out that you had to be a lab rat that consumed 350 cans of diet soda daily, over a long period of time, to have a small increased incidence of rat bladder cancer.

And, despite many food/food additive scares since the 60's, the average life expectancy of all Americans has been gradually increasing to reach an all time high in 2012 : 78.8 years!

So get a grip and pass the bacon!

dcumpian has pointed at the confusion here between the "strength of evidence" and the "absolute risk." The strength of evidence that firecrackers cause vision loss is very high. Someone hit in the eye by a firecracker as it is exploding very very probably suffered his subsequent immediate loss of vision in that eye as the result of the firecracker. Every year dozens of people lose an eye to a firecracker worldwide, but that is a very small risk when divided by the total population, or even the total population who have spent time within hearing distance of a firecracker. So firecrackers very clearly are capable of blinding, but your risk of actually being blinded by a firecracker is small.

You will quite probably reduce your risk of some cancers by avoiding "processed" meat. What your current personal  risk for developing those cancers is depends on a lot of factors, and is not defined. A relative risk reduction can be misleading when confused with an absolute risk. If your chance of winning the lottery is ten million to one per ticket, and you buy two tickets, your chance of winning has doubled. That sounds like a large number, but your chance is still five million to one. A more instructive number you need to figure your benefit from quitting bacon is the number needed to treat (NNT). In the case of the lottery, how many people would have to buy a unique ticket number to be sure that one has a winner? It turns out that 9,999,999 people will be buying a losing ticket in order to be sure that one person has a winner. How many people who will never get the cancer in question if they keep eating bacon will have to quit to prevent one cancer? No one has collected the data and done the calculation that would answer that. So the question is...do you feel lucky?

Just being alive causes cancer.

Couldn't cancer simply be part of evolution? Trial and error. Like a long process of adaptation, over thousands and thousands of years.

How do you mean Krist? I'm really interested in what you're trying to suggest.

Any factor that drives evolution has to be carried genetically, whether it is beneficial or not to the gene pool it exists in. And more often than not, genes that carry harmful traits are only eliminated from a species' gene pool if their expression prevents reproduction, either in some physically manner, or by proving fatal to the organism prior to its reaching sexual maturity.

Cancer itself isn't transferred genetically. However, the propensity for any particular organism to develop cancer can certainly be inherited and passed on. Non-genetic extraneous carcinogens obviously have a major influence on whether an animal succumbs to the disease, but their effects would only impact a specific organism during its lifetime. For the cancer to have any effect on such an organism's progeny, it would need to alter its DNA in some way.

Don't tell me you believe the food police... they change every few years. Now eggs don't raise your cholesterol. Eat what you like. You're going to die anyway one day, enjoy life! These people likely have agendas or so premise where they throw out everything that does not agree with the "premise", then they state their "facts" as if they really are facts....

There may well be some 'conspiracy' involving food scientists and nutritionists... who knows.

Then again, they might just be presenting the 'facts' according to the best evidence available, and then updating those 'facts' as new evidence is uncovered. It's sort of how science works. I'm certain that the 'best evidence' available once 'proved' the earth was flat, and that our planet was the centre of the solar system. Until some 'better' evidence came along.

jbow

Butter, eggs, lard, bacon..er becan, ham, RED MEAT.... are all good for you. They are lying. These things are natural foods.

Hmm. Most of those things are only edible to most modern Homo sapiens if they've been cooked, or processed. So I wouldn't class them as 'natural', in the strictest sense. As a process, cooking changes the chemistry of food to make it more digestible.

I've long been a proponent of the theory that mastering fire and learning to cook raw food was one of the major evolutionary drivers in early man. Most animals 'waste' large parts of their lives eating enough raw food to survive on. As cooked food is usually much more efficiently digested, our ancestors could afford to spend less time eating and more time sourcing their food.

This also allowed our brains to further increase in size. Brains need a lot of energy to run on, so being able to fuel them became easier as cooking developed. Bigger brains led to better ways to hunt, kill, survive, cook. Hence even bigger brains could develop, and so on.

And then the FSF arrived. The peak of human evolution if ever there was.

Actually, I almost didn't dare mention the idea because I don't have any scientific training of any kind. That's why I formulated the idea as a question, and, indeed, as you pointed out, the fact that it can't be genetically transferred would make the idea null and void.

Though, to be honest, I was thinking of cancer as a failure in the evolution process, an early and unsuccessful attempt at adaptation. Or maybe even a draft, that's rejected.

I don't know. I shouldn't even be messing with those ideas - that's really not my field of competence. Hence I'm more asking than trying to submit an idea.

Speaking of evolution. has anybody read 'Darwin's Radio'?  It's a fictional bit based on evolution concepts.  Good read if you like sci-fi-medical fiction.

Probably Thanksgiving tradition ... just the memory of cooking 30 or so 36Lb turkeys (starting on Monday) has been enough for me not to bother with turkey for 40 years now ... just have no taste for it ... but I can still make 50 Gallons of Split Pea soup, 50 Gallons of Turkey Bisque, 50 Gallons of Turkey Gravy, and so much dressing that I can't stand smelling sage anymore!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

It's too bad you don't like turkey anymore  .
Oh well, I guess I'm not coming over to your house for Thanksgiving
