no sound from keyboard

Any help would be very welcome I cannot get any sound from my Roland ep.7e keyboard. I have conneccted the midi cables from the keyboard to my soundcard through a games port ( soundcard Cmedia 18738) the card is working through my pc and speakers. In control panel I have only this card enabled. when I open a new project in sonar home edition 7 and in MIDI devices I have ony MPU-401 input checked ( only choice) and the same in outputs along with micosoft GS wavetable. When I press the plus button to pull down the dropzone and then assign a sound the virtual keyboard on the Dropzone sounds great, but my actual keyboard remains mute. Can anyone help me fathom how to get my MIDI keyboard to work. Hope this makes sense

    You have a few options:

    1) You can connect the audio output of the keyboard to your soundcard. This way you could record audio tracks from the keyboard.

    2) You can use the MIDI connection to control a softsynth like DropZone. The MIDI cables only send control information and don't carry any audio signals. You can record the MIDI data onto a MIDI track.

    3) You could do both simultaneously: record a MIDI track and an audio track.

For each track, audio and MIDI, you must select an input and an output. It's not enough to just select the MIDI device or audio device under the Options menu.
In a MIDI track, set both the input and output to the MPU and that will recieve input from the keyboard and send the MIDI data back to the keyboard for it to be played by the keyboard's synthesizer.
If you want to 'play' a soft synth, set the input to the MPU and the output to the soft synth.
And use different MIDI output channels for each MIDI track. MIDI Omni is okay for input channel, unless you know what channel the keyboard transmits data on.
