no sound
Hi - Suddenly when I open Sonar X1, I get the message "the current audio driver either doesn't support the audio format, or is in use by another application. Nothing has changed & my interface is OK...I can use other DAW's including an old Cakewalk Guitar Tracks. Any ideas? I started to write tech support but I don't think they support X1 any more. Thanks.

This has happened to me and I solved it by restarting the computer. IIRC it happened after I had used mediaplayer when Sonar was on. It does not happen anymore after I started using my duocapture.

Yes I've tried that...now the waveforms aren't showing. I don't get that message saying it can't find the audio files, I just can't see or hear them. I emptied the picture cache but ...

Is it just one project or any/all projects you try? And what if you begin a new project? I guess I would start with the driver settings in preferences and check those first. It's unlikely they would have changed but... I think kakku may be on to something with another program having hijacked your audio drivers. A reboot usually restores this, but check to make sure something else is not running in Task Manager that may be using them and not giving them back.

Do you have Windows pointing to your audio interface as the Windows Default Audio Device? If so, then something else could have grabbed control of it. And, I concur with checking to make sure your Driver Mode and settings are correct in Sonar Preferences - Audio>Devices, Audio>Playback and Recording, and Audio>Driver Settings. If none of the above, or a reboot, don't take care of it - perhaps you could elaborate on exactly what steps you are following when the message appears. Bob Bone

Thanks Bob. Yes my interface is the default in windows, but now I'm thinking the interface itself maybe malfunctioning. I discovered I'm not able to record in other DAW software either, even though they will play files back & sonar won't - that's the confusing part.

I have run into all kinds of problems whenever I have the audio interface shared between Windows and applications like Sonar, so I just never ever never do that anymore - and don't ever have those kinds of problems anymore either. Perhaps you could test out what happens if you set your Windows Default Audio Device to something else - anything but your interface, and then see how Sonar and these other applications behave. I always make sure only a single audio application accesses my audio interface at any one time, as I use ASIO drivers, and it gets flaky for me if I DO try to have multiple things going after the drivers. So - maybe you can test out the above and post back? Also, what ARE you using for an audio interface, and what Driver Mode in Sonar are you using? (Preferences>Audio>Playback and Recording) Bob Bone

Thanks Bob - I use an old Edirol UA-5 interface & WDM drivers. I haven't been able to use Asio for some reason - maybe bec the interface is old. So it may be time to trade up.

If you first de-select your interface in Preferences>Audio>Devices, and THEN go into Preferences>Audio>Playback and Recording, does it at THAT point let you select ASIO as the Sonar Driver Mode? If it does allow you to select that, then click Apply, and it will hopefully then auto-select your audio interface and such for you. If the above does not work, please indicate what happens when you try it, Bob Bone

Bob - I am able to select ASIO but my interface doesn't work with it. I don't know why. I went back & reselected WDM & still get no sound. I'm already shopping for a new interface - it's time. I'm going to give this issue a rest until it arrives & hopefully that will solve the problem. Even if it didn't, it's time for a new interface after 12 years! Thanks for yr responses!!
