noise using FX chain

hi everyone, this is bad, I mean real bad. when I try and put one of the FX chain effects i.e. drums/kick drum life I get a horrible noise something like a shorted out wire, real loud sounds like my monitors are going to die in fact i'm quite sure if I allowed it to continue my monitors would be damaged. this is a new thing, it happens on all of the FX chain plug in's drums/guitars/vox. like I said this is real bad and never heard it before. any ideas?
