Thanks I'll give both ideas a try. This is a simple bass line DI'd to my BR800 and USB to Sonar all in one. What would make a crappy wave? A crappy pickup? (It's a Fender Squire P-Bass)

Hmm.. neither the offset command nor recording with Remove DC offset enabled during record seem to make any perceivable difference to the wave form..

even though you have non-symmetrical waves, the big question is.... Can you hear any sort of issue with that wave that makes you want to fix it? I have noticed this on mine as well..... and I have the DC offset on..... to me it's not a big deal as long as it sounds good.

A good point. It sounds as good raw as I'd expect from the equipment I guess. It sounds acceptable once I added some icing. Thanks.

Non-symmetrical waves does not necessarily mean there's DC offset. Many instruments produce non-symmetrical waves--anything in the brass family for example. If you run a DC offset remover, and the wave is still asymmetrical, then it's probably not a problem.
Sonar's "Analyst" plugin also has a DC meter. What does it say about it?

That's a new one to me. What a useful tool for EQ! Thanks. I see a little "DC" in the bottom corner but what do I look for? Does it do something when it's off DC?

M_Glenn_M Thanks guys. I'd still like to know how to recognize one if I saw or heard it. Not always easy to spot. If you saw a pure sine wave and the line did not go down the center equally that would be an example of DC offset. Take any wave file and introduce a DC offset and then compare it to the original. http://www.flickr.com/photos/81774270@N03/ Sine2 has the DC offset.

Try your bass thru a DI box or even direct (not thru your amp) and compare waveforms. That would point to an amp problem. I have never seen a waveform look like that.

I'm no expert on DC offset but I thought you could just record silence and see where the flat line lies. If it isn't dead centre of the wave clip then you have DC offset. You don't need to record actual audio sound to see it. In fact it's probably easier to see a clip is silent. That's what I've always thought anyway.

Non symmetrical waveform illustrations indicate odd ordered harmonics are present in the overtones and dynamically linked to the timbre of the tone. best regards, mike

Does the Cakewalk Analyst show DC Offset? It has an indicator on it that is easy to miss on the very far right.

You don't need to record actual audio sound to see it. In fact it's probably easier to see a clip is silent. That's what I've always thought anyway. If you record "pure" silence there will be no flat line. However almost every soundcard will have a noise floor and some inaudible hiss will be present if that's what you're referring to as a flat line. Zoom in fully on the amplitude axis and you will see if the noise floor is sitting along the baseline or not. That's still not a guaranteed method of finding DC offset.
