"not installed properly" error persists

Hello
I would appreciate any help I can get about this issue:

I have Sonar HS6XL, running on Windows Vista (yeah, I know... but it's
been fine until very recently...).
Something has happened recently that makes it impossible for me
to open the program, either directly or with a project file. I get the
error message, "SONAR is not properly installed. Please reintsall using
your original CD."
Of course I have reinstalled, uninstalled everything AND re-reintsalled,
with the 6.2.2 patch and without, and the problem remains.
I ran the patchapp utility CW has online which is supposed to repair
registry entries (or whatever) -- it says there is "Nothing to do."

I did run a registry "clean-up" tool recently, but after this error began,
I "restored" back to the previous registry settings, which should have
put everything back as it was when Sonar was working just fine.

After the third time on hold with CW Tech Support for more than 20 minutes
with no answer, I'm reaching out to any kind soul who might have a thought.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi jeffreim,

I can tell you about my personal exeperience with Vista and music software. I was not able to run one single program in a reliable way until i've:

1-Reinstalled Vista (a clean install, not update from an installed verison)
    2-Installed Service Pack 1
3-Run Windows Update (only for patches and hotfix, not for drivers)
4-Installed every update possible (from drivers to common apps like Quicktime, Adobe Reader etc.)

I've Vista on my notebook and now it works fine with Project5 2.5.1 and latest Home Studio 7 XL (along with Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 9.0c).

I hope this can help you in any way...

Most registry cleaners are absolute poison as far as Sonar/HS goes.

The best thing to do is if you have an actual system restore point from before you ran the registry cleaner to use that restore point. Then, uninstall and reinstall.

I've used Registry Mechanic for years...No problems...

I always advocate setting a system restore point whenever possible.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I appreciate your taking the time to help out.

The registry tool I used was "RegCure."

I tried using System Restore, but could not get all the way back
to the point before I ran the registry cleaner. When I try to get
back to that point, or earlier, it does not work. So I ended up
restoring several times -- back one point at a time -- until I
reached a point where I got an error message each time, and
I could restore neither there nor earlier.

If indeed it comes to a "clean re-install" of Vista, how do I do
that without losing documents and settings -- just back up to
disc? Or is there some trick? As you can no doubt tell, my
experience level with system issues is less than expert. I'd
appreciate any more info that might help me get Sonar up
    and running again.

    Thanks again
    Jeff

Just in case this might shed some light:
The error message I get that keeps me from restoring
far enough back to fix the registry changes is:
"Incompatible version of the serializing package. (0x80070724)"

I'd sooo much prefer not having to totally reinstall my OS --
that scares me. And I'm not even sure I have a disc to do it --
I have a relatively new DELL Inspiron that came w/ Vista Home
Premium pre-installed, and I've only found a "Drivers and Utilities"
reinstallation disc, not a Windows disc. I do have an XP re-installation
disc -- from my older DELL Laptop -- if worse comes to worst, can
I use THAT and replace Vista with XP? I certainly wish I'd chosen
to stick with XP at this point.

Anyway, Thanks all for your kind guidance.

Most systems delivered over the past few years from Dell have a factory partition on them to restore to original factory settings.. I've used it several times with XP, but never on Vista... The process is different, but you might take a look at this article...

    http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&cs=19&docid=28C0548D825EB65DE040A68F5B2865A8&journalid=EF74739002FD11DCA471438DA0E20ADD&l=en&s=dhs

It will delete all of your data so be sure you have a backup....

As for trying to downgrade using an old version of XP, that might or might not work... It could be that you have hardware in your laptop that does not have XP drivers and even if they do, it might be hard to find them... It's hard enough to get the right chipset and onboard drivers using the DVD that came with it to restore.... Especially if you are a novice at that kind of stuff... The factory restore option above, (if it works like it does with XP) is quite painless.

Can I have more talent in the monitors... PLEASE?
