not sure why my automation stops working...

Hey guys.  When i use automation, say volume for example, sometimes it stops working when i adjust the nodes, sometimes it doesn't.  I'm having a hard time finding the rules about editing automation.  Any ideas what I might be doing wrong, or not doing?
