note not sounding after editing in piano roll view

Hi,

Sorry for posting the same question twice, Chappel suggested this forum.  Thanks.

I just downloaded and installed X1 (studio version) and am following along with the Sonar X1 Experience tutorials, which are excellent.  I made my own version of the instructor's X-plained file with a drum loop, bass guitar, cow bell and shaker.

Then I recorded my own piano part using the Roland Groove soft synth.  This part is just 7 whole notes long.  I went to piano roll view to clean it up and found that after moving the notes into position at the beginning of the measures, the the D in measure 6 would not sound.  It is not muted and it has velocity.  I tried everything I could think of to fix this including re-recording the part.  I could hear all the notes right after recording, but every time I went to move the notes around to clean them up, this particular note would stop sounding.   Does this have something to do with using whole notes?  If somebody could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. Here is a link to the CWP file (audio files not included, but the soft synth tracks work OK).  Thanks very much.

2 things that could be happening are:
        1. The note may be out of range for the particular patch you have selected. Drag the note up or down and see if it plays
        2. You have a duplicate note right close to the starting point of the D you are working with. The second note could be giving a "note off" signal to the synth.  In PRV select the note and drag up or down and see if there is another note hidden behind it (or select the note and hit delete on keyboard).  Then try re-entering the correct note.
Also, if you have 2 consecutive notes that are the same make sure that there are a few ticks of space between them. Note overlaps of same note can cause this as well.

    Hi Lorneyb2,

Thanks for the tips.  I have tried them all and am pretty sure my note is a good one.

Meanwhile, I went to the Creative Labs Audio Interface setup for Sonar X1 and tried to follow the directions there in case it was a hardware problem with my Creative Labs X-Fi card.

I couldn't follow the directions exactly because the recommended ASIO mode choice in Playback and Recording had no devices in the devices list.  So I went with MME mode.  But after changing driver modes a few times and applying, all the notes in my piano part were suddenly working again.  I think I may have some kind of setup problem with my sound card.  I will try Cakewalk support.  Thanks again.

    Hi,

I got a great reply from Cakewalk Support.  I will quote here:

    1. First, let's try boosting your midi buffers. Go to <Edit | Preferences | MIDI | Playback and Recording> and increase your playback MIDI buffer size from 250 to 500. Hopefully this will help with your MIDI note drop outs.

    2. If you are still dropping notes, go to <Help | What's New> and search for AUD.ini. Within this help sections, scroll down to variable entitled "ExtraPluginBufs=". Follow the instructions within the help page on how to adjust this value within the AUD file.

    3. You can try going to <C:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache> and deleting the contents of this folder. This should help free up space so SONAR may perfom more efficiently. Please ONLY delete the contents, do not delete the folder itself.

The first suggestion worked for me.  I increased the playback MIDI buffer size from 68, first to 250, then to 500 which did the trick.  No more dropped notes.  Thanks again, Cakewalk support.
