i will ignore the insert synth dialog box in favor of setting up from scratch so you understand the process.

insert omnisphere. if it comes up as a simple instrument track, then right click and split it. you will have one midi and one audio track. duplicate both until you have 8 of each. Each MIDI track needs its Channel changing to Omnisphere 1 thu 8. Each audio track needs its input changing to Omnisphere stereo A through H.

In omnisphere, go to the Multi tab at the top and change each patches output from A thru H (you will notice the midi channels are already 1-8)

Order all your tracks together in Sonar, highlight, right click and save as track template. to load your second instance, right click in the empty track pane and Insert From Track Template.

    Open Insert Soft Synth>
click the option that says "All Synth Audio Outputs"

After you have loaded up the Omnisphere patches you want...then go to "Multi" and assign all the patches to respective outputs.  It is a little strange 'cause Omnisphere labels the outputs with letters A to H.

Of course you will need to insert corresponding midi channels in Sonar.

looks like Perfect Print beat me to it.  His way works too.....

do i start from a normal template or blank project?

what im doing now. new from template- choose normal template- delete unused audio and midi tracks.

my synth window settings may be wrong. im not sure what needs to be selected in the synth box.

i would give my settings but im not sure which ones to state.
