One of my favourites Rob, a great example of how to mix vocals without having them right up front and in your face, but still clear as a bell. Oh, guitars are good too...

I did not really get a "Queen Vibe" but the vocals are channeling Van Halen. I like this quite a bit. Good mix and excellent performance. Tell us about your recording path and process. After all, we be recording geeks.

howdy stevee...... you know, folks hear something different in almost everything i post... and it's all over the map!! and rarely is there an influence (van halen, not an influence)... but i don't mind comparisons, it's the easiest way for someone reviewing a tune to come up with a similarity to compare.... i wished i sold a millionth of the albums van halen sold!! LOL recording paths, that's a little tougher to answer: in short, it's very straightfoward; guitars in to amps, into mics or a palmer pdi-09, into a mic pre or interface, and into the daw..... drums are either live or programmed into superior drummer....with superior, i typically just take raw drum tracks, and mix and eq them as if i actually recorded them.. bass is a combo of a direct box (sansamp bass di) and a direct off my mesa boogie tube guitar head..... keys are usually using a maudio keyboard triggering samples.... vox are straight into either a KSM44, a AT4033, or a ADK Hamburg- into a preamp, into a dbx compressor, into the interface and into the daw. some of the guitars used in this recording:

Thanks for the pics and info. My comment about the vocals is how the harmony/BV are arranged. There is a cool loose flavor that summons memories of the Stones and Van Halen. Queens Freddie Mercury was a brilliant harmony/vocal arranger and layered intensely tight harmony parts. Much of Queen recorded vocals featured him layering multiple harmony parts solo. It's really funny what folks hear in songs. Several years ago, I wrote and recorded a rock song (Sorrow) that was picked up by a few radio stations. One thing led to another and the song literally was played all over the world but for some reason was most popular in Great Britain. I got a number of emails asking if I was channeling David Bowie. LOL. Now, I liked David Bowie but I had really not considered him an influence.. It was actually flattering to have a song actually get added to rotation on a number of stations. Even today, when I listen, I don't quite get the David Bowie gestalt that was attributed. LOL.

hey michael, i love those old ibanez's, when i bought my first artist (#2619) i was actually shopping for a les paul, and could not find a single one i could bond with. i picked up that artist, and it was like 'voila'. the les paul killer! LOL this one here, is actually a 1977 #2618, and it is in almost new condition, except for the aging of the finish, not a ding or mark or buckle rash, nothing! it's fun to play.

Cool story! Both about the song and the Ibanez Artist. A pal bought a Yamaha SG2000 and it was cool, but when I played the Artist, I thought, just like you said, "I'd rather have this than an LP". Whenever I played an original song live (solo mostly), or a "latest track" for a pal or student, I was always caught off guard by who they thought of..... some were quite baffling! LOL Like a bluegrass/rock flavored tune of mine... one guy said it was a metal tune and another called it "surf Nazi music"!!! LOL Still makes me shake my head and laugh. Michael

i agree with you about freddy and co's super tight vox arrangements... i have done some similar vox arrangements on some of my earlier mixes, i can sing em as tight as i want, but i never liked the SOUND of it when i did it.... so i now purposefully track my vox and backups LOOSER...., yes, in the vein of the stones, moreso than van halen, which are still fairly tight. to me, it's a bit more rock and roll vibe-wise, i think since i write music that is just a bit prog, i need a more rock approach to the voxes, to balance what i'm going for.
