playlist

I have been using cakewalk version 5 forever for playing back .mids at live performances. I bought the music creator program since the old version I am using won't load on a newer xp laptop. Music creator is fine and i can navigate around it but the playlist i am used to using is different. In a live setting i cue up songs depending on the crowd and need the ability to modify the set. My problem is that when I create a new setlist or .set I have no way of opening it from w/in the program. it gives me the option to open file type and I choose .st but don't see my sets. I must be doing something wrong, how do i open the .set folder with my set list from w/ in the program???

thanks

    Frank,
I've never used the playlists myself, but I looked in the help files and it says you need to open the play list view. According to the help files, you choose: FILE>NEW>PLAYLISTS and a new window will pop up. The playlists in this window is at the VERY TOP, not in alphabetical order.

Once you have the playlist view open, you should be able to open and save SET files.

yes, I can create a new playlist but cannot access the ones created from this process after they are created. If I then go to file>open> and choose .set or playlist from file type, I never see the .set files.

    Any ideas???
    Thanks for the reply

No, I'm really not sure what the problem might be. I just went and created a playlist, saved it, exited out of CW, restarted CW, chose OPEN (all CW files) and the .set file Ihad just created was sitting there in the folder where I saved it.

Can someone who has MC verify that this works with MC? (sorry, frank, I don't own MC)

somthing interesting, if Itype the first few letters of the .set i created, It shows up in the drop down menu. I just can't see a list of the .set filesto choose from like I did in version 5 of cakewalk.

I have been using cakewalk version 5 forever for playing back .mids at live performances.

I still use Cakewalk 5 for the Playlist feature! It's great for live performance!

Because of Windows upgrades and over all new features in Sonar 6, I have just recently upgraded.

I'm also very surprised to see the lack of features in the playlist/sets window.
It's as though it was thrown in at the last minute.

I have a feeling there just isn't a large enough demand for it.
Are live musicians a dying breed?

My vote is to pop the old Cakewalk 5 playlist view into all newer Cakewalk products that would apply.

    My two cents,

bring this up over at the sonar forum and you might get more help, there are many more performing musicians there, or go to audiominds.com and ask around there, they are some pretty heady folks.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

    My 2 cents here

I have MC 2002 and have no access to playlists. Apparently it has been partially activated in MC3, [just guessing from your post] but it sounds like it it was deactivated later on in the program sequence. [Lots of things linger when they rerelease portions of the old Sonar as an MC version.]

I too had enjoyed playlist when I was using Cakewalk Pro 3.0, years ago. We all must understand that many of our previous programs were "top of the line" and all the bells and whistles were not carried forward into MC. [A basic beginning program with quite a bit of power, by the way].

Frankly, Cakewalk Professional 3.0 was a great program and cost less than $200, but it didn't have full audio capability. You could insert a WAV file but had to do your audio mixing somewhere else.

MC has given me a lot of new capabilities that I never had before. I have had to sacrifice some of my favorites Like CAL programming and the playlist; however, I'm really not interested in upgrading to SONAR just to recover some of my favorites. I can't justify the investment.

If you are a musician and getting sufficient money for your gigs, then certainly an investment in Sonar would make sense for you.

It always comes down to personal choices.
    Good luck.

This goes to beagle: what program are you using?? Maybe i should just upgrade to a more robust version. All I care about are playing midi files, I don't use the audio at all. I am happy with what I am using but the laptop is old and out of HD space and the old version of Cakewalk won't work with XP.

Sonar Home Studio 4 will perform the playlists like I mentioned. However, SHS6 will be released sometime later this month. If you can wait, I'd get that version, OR see if you can get a discounted version of SHS4 when SHS6 comes out.

I have MC3 and you got me thinking about the playlist feature since I am interested in putting together a set with performance/backing track versions of my tunes. I found the same issue you did where you create a playlist but couldn't open it later. By trial and error I realized you have to type in the whole name of the playlist on the open dialogue. It won't just appear in the drop down. If you can't remember what you called it, it may be easier to create a new one.

My question is: is there a way to adjust the gap between songs, short of adding extra measures to the song?

Sorry, meadowman, I don't know. I know that other programs like itunes will allow you to choose the length (or lack thereof) between songs.

For once I actually looked in the Help screens - I had forgotten about them since this forum is so much better, and it did show that you can adjust the gap between songs - from the playlist screen, you hit the hourglass icon which opens a little window where you can adjust the timing. You have to do it individually for each song; I would prefer a global setting, but this works.
