possible to put sonar on 2nd computer?
I’m wanting to put sonar on my desktop. I’ve had it on my laptop since platinum was released. I plan to continue to us it. I would like to copy all my projects audio and info from my laptop to the desktop as well. Both are win 7 64bit. How could I go about this? I’m upgrading my desktop from 4g ram to 16g. I feel my workflow would be much faster on the desktop to get my projects finished in case something “happens” with sonar. (Hope not)
Another question is am I in a “safer” position with win 7 as far as future updates altering sonars software inoperable??
Lastly, Has anybody noticed sonar changed the main page?? It no longer has the “nice doing business with you for 30 years, have a nice life” (thanks for letting us stick it to you on the lifetime lingo)
I found that strange.. really hope Sonar stays alive and moves on from this. I really don’t wanna switch and relearn processes and new software in general.

Yes, you can legitimately install SONAR on two computers.

Thanks bitflipper. Can you point me in a direction how I would move my complete projects to the new computer? Audio, settings, midi, data etc.. Will it move them as they are? For example most of my final projects tracks are frozen. Would they remain that way once moved?

I have it on 7 , all say they are legal. There is no 2 computer rule, there is only the fact that you get 2 installs of certain VST's like AD2. The rule is that only YOU can use the software.

Yes, yes and Yes. Project data is stored with project files. So if they were frozen in your project they will be frozen on a new pc. only thing is different is the Sonar installed on a new PC. Sonar looks for Midi, audio track data in the working projects folder so just move your projects folder/or projects to new pc with all project files intact. The thing you want to be most concerned with is making sure you have 3rd party plug ins installed in same directory's. sonar will find them but sometimes when they are in a different location Sonar will have a brain fart moment.

I use 2 methods of working between my 3 machines. I have an upstairs Studio DAW where I do my recording, a Downstairs editing and mastering DAW and a laptop. Method 1- external 1TB HD Method 2- a cloud service- One Drive. All my projects are in their own folders and those folders are inside an "album" folder. On all machines I have a Sonar Data drive ( partition on my laptop) and Sonar is set to "open" there looking for Projects. So all I need to do is drag and drop my project folders to the External drive or save as to One Drive. Then drag and drop those to the second machines Sonar Data Drive. When I do this I often date the Folder so as to keep track of where my most up to date stuff is. This is were One Drive is better. as everything is automatically in sync. I always use the FILE menu for opening projects. I set Sonars Pathways to go directly to my Data drive. When you open those projects they should be more or less identical to the versions on your other machine. What's important is to have all the same VST's and Plug ins. My 2 desktops have everything loaded and licenced. Another thing is to have 2 similar audio interfaces or use the same one for both. Using a radically different interface, or worse, none at al,l upsets Sonar and you'll have a bunch of dialog box warnings happening. My 2 interfaces work without issue and the projects open on both computers with out a hiccup. I set up the downstairs DAW so as not to abandon my wife at night. It's in a family room. She's used to hearing the same song over and over :) I don't record, I only edit stuff and experiment with VST's and plug ins. So instead of the external drive I thought I'd use One drive. Works like a charm. No more worries about which is the newest version. It also gives me an off site back up of my work. I did learn not to try and record audio directly to one drive. It crashes. I use "save as" to create a local file and use that. When done I just use "save as" again to one drive. I am going to set up an on site shared Hard drive via my router and CAT 5 system someday. If your projects are not properly stored in one folder then you can easily fix this by opening them one at a time and using "save as" to the external drive and make sure to tick the "copy audio with project" box.

I only use one computer, but since I paid for a lifetime of updates that only lasted a year I wonder why I load SPLAT on every computer I see. It seems like honesty runs on a one way street. There has been an admirable amount of decency from our members, not so much from Gibson. I should have been nervous when Gibson bought Cakewalk. When I bought my 335 in 2013 it took 8 months and 4 guitars before one from the factory worked. Matron Landslide

I had a similar experience with a Les Paul I ordered. The frets ends were literally popping through the white neck binding. For a moment I thought it was actually a Chibson. I sent it back and the next one I received was a better but needed a major set up. My guy who does my guitars here in Boston said he has seen a downward reduction in quality in the past few years. This was back in 2014. so im sure it has got worse.

Exactly! I have a huge respect for the law when the law gives me reason to respect it. I'm a Canadian for cripes sakes, we have to be the most law abiding culture there ever was. I put my snowtires on in October even though it won't be snowing for a month yet. That's our law. SO I make up a new law for Sonar and I say you can put it on every computer in you house and barn. AS LONG AS YOU ARE THE ONLY USER! I draw the line at giving Sonar away free to other people and certainly this will happen big time if they pull down the servers and hand out a magic key. I think it might be the delay in doing this. Somebody will probably make a key gen that works with the offline activation. I see that as not being difficult for a tech geek. Then we have to question our morals when the day comes that we would need to resort to a key gen because Cakewalk is long gone as a company and Gibson too. We are told in the FAQ that they plan on being around until the spring so I am optimistic we will get our solution. Then the only roadblock would be w!) updates which there are many solutions for.

I'd say you could pretty much go whooppee and install it on as many as you like now! Cakewalk have always been very fair and liberal in allowing multiple installs. I have had registered installations on 3-4 computers for the past 20 years with zero issues. The exception, as others have mentioned, is some bonus content like melodyne. I suspect Cakewalks care factor at this point is running pretty low:)

Why is this even a discussion? Well I know why... When I got slat in 2015 it said NOTHING about how many systems it could be on! and there is NOTHING that prevents ANY user from using their CC to install splat on a limited number of computers! Frankly many had a foundation of their studio's based on Cakewalk's DAWs... And all this forum is now, is a BAD JOKE and a slap in the face to the Cakewalk users! Yet here WE all are, and we have heard everything you could possibly ask about Cakewalk products! AND WE KEEP ASKING FOR THE PUNCH LINE! OVER AND OVER and it's still the same! WE ALL GOT F_-_-_ed! by CAKEWALK & GIBSON! We owe them NO respect! WE owe them NO loyalty! WE owe them nothing! They stole our cash with lies~! They fired all the best DAW builders on this earth! What's left? Duh... how many copies can I install of my worthless "unsupported" DAW? REALLY? is this your life!? "IMO" Don't look up here "the joke's in your hands" fools, the lot! Sorry!

That's because you never stopped to read the ULA (User License Agreement). You just clicked and clicked.....clicked.....clicked a check box.....clicked install with out reading it. Its right before the installation of Sonar.

The pointless thing about the question is, why even ask, just do it. That's what I've always done. It will either work or it won't work. I don't need anyones permision.

If someone does eventually purchase the IP to SONAR and the rest of the Cakewalk products, the EULA will still apply, at least to the extent that the new owner *could* pursue legal action. They probably won't, though.
I plan to have two installs. One on the new workstation I just put together to actually use, and once the copy on my desktop is decommissioned I'll keep a copy on my laptop as a portable instance. I don't plan to activate the third party plug-ins on the laptop - it'll just be for capturing audio or MIDI in places taking my workstation isn't possible (actually, I will probably only use the laptop to capture MIDI - I have digital recorders for the audio). I will also continue to only use it on one of the machines at any one time.
This is what is allowed by the End User License Agreement and I'm good with that. Yes, screw Gibson and the wooden pony they rode in on, but I'm keeping it legal.

Let me say this 1st, MOST everything I've said in this forum over the last few years was said because I don't like to be ripped off and I hate it more when others get ripped off! I am not a "corporate friendly" person! lol But I came to truly respect the Bakers and many on this forum!! You as well chuckebaby! And if Cakewalk wanted to limit installation they would have when they built the CC from the ground up! The only time it "may have said "two systems" was possibly reference above this as (4 /8/16) I did read something in this forum about it but that went away. and considering I was already install and running I would not "click" "click" read... but I remember I did look into it at the time! and I would have bought another copy of Splat it it would have been an issue! Now I can't even find a user agreement... it should be listed in the "about area"... or in the help Docs. it's not.
