post production...help...I need to remove some fan/hum noise from a recording

Hello guys,

I have Sonar X1 Producer with all the izotope plugins such as alloy and restoration. I am recording some church services for my church to convert them into a podcast on iTunes. The recording turned out good except there is a noticeable hum/a ceiling fan noise in the background. Our church is located in a warehouse type area so lots of reverb and background noise. I tired the hum removal plugin from izotope,  it helped but still did not eliminate it. I do not know a whole lot about frequencies so it is hard for me to find the frequency to kill it with an eq. Does anyone know some tricks with eq or other plugins to help eliminate that annoying frequency?

Also, are there any online tutorials that could help me in the future to better my ear for post production stuff?

    I think EQ is the way to go on this - but you'll need to use a decent parametric that allows you to sweep through the frequencies.  The trick is to go with a pretty high and tight "Q" and just sweep through the frequencies.  You'll hear it when you hit it! Then pull it down till you have reduced the noise.
    If your attempt at removing the hum comes with a graphical representation of the notch, then you won't have to sweep much away from there to find it.

    Michael - if you have izotope restoration, you should have the hum removal app. Follow the instruction manual and you should get reasonable results. The restoration products I use are scratch-free and noise-free from Algorithmix. They do an absolutely amazing job. You can install demos for both that work for a week or two. Again, run processes in the specified order and follow instructions carefully. Otherwise in the end, you could have more artifacts than you started with. We've used this in post on audio with impulse and broadband noise (e.g., a jet flies over the middle of a dialogue) and it comes out slick as a whistle. If you try notching it out with EQ, you'll remove a noticeble amount of signal you want to keep. The restoration software will attenuate or remove only the targeted noise and its harmonics.

    You may also need to attenuate the harmonics of the sound, freq's that are double and triple the base freq. 

    EDIT: oops peregrine mentioned that too!

    If the noise reverberates a lot, it's going to be difficult to completely eliminate the noise. If you want to provide me a sample of audio, I don't mind taking a quick run at it. I also have all the iZotope plugs including RX2 (not advanced). 

    It might be easier for me to just play around and then show you the settings I chose.
