potentially lost another project in X1. **SOLVED**

been working on this project for several months now and just the other day found it wouldn't open. X1 is stuck trying to open it with the blue spinning circle that indicates it's loading - but it doesn't. i left it spinning for hours. I tried all the tricks, ie, safe mode, no plugins.. etc.. restarted etc.. I have other projects that load fine so i know its isolated to this one. same thing happened to one other project a while ago. lost it. i tried to create a new project and import the tracks but then they don't line up and would likely spend months trying to get them perfectly aligned if even i could. i thought i had versioning activated but i cannot seem to locate the versions. yes, autosave was activated but those files suffer the same fate (ie, no open) not sure what to do. i suspect a track was corrupted or a plugin conflict is the cause. what to do ???

    That's a nasty one.
I find it strange that not even safe mode allowed you to open, and that you got no error message. The fact that autosaved versions suffer the same might well point to plugins.

When you tried safe mode, did you get no pop ups to pick the allowed VSTs - anything?
Do you open the projects inside SONAR or clicking the .cwp-icon? Two lost .cwp-projects in a short time is alarming. Even if they were .cwb's, which are more vulnerable, it would be equally alarming.

What are your PC specs and OS? How much free space on HDDs? HDD's defragged? What plugins did you have in the projects? I was close to losing a project with Melodyne plugin active in it once.
Have you checked the save-path in case SONAR is looking for the project in the wrong place (but in that case you should get an error message)?

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

do you know how to find the back up files created by versioning?
They can't be opened from Sonar's regular "open file" dialog.  You can navigate to them directly using windows, or there is a key command i think that allows you to (shift click?)

I'm just saying, double check- because if you have those versions saved somewhere, you might be fine.

If all else fails, maybe tech support can recover the cwp for you if you send them a copy.

FWIW, Tech Support doesn't have access to any special tools for project recovery. In the past people who had projects from older versions of SONAR (prior to 7) could send them to support and we would re-save them in a newer version. Since the project was originally authored in the X series it already includes this code.

The two things I can recommend to the original poster is going back to a previous project file or dragging the project file from the browser into a new blank project. Also if you've updated any 3rd party plug-ins you may want to roll back.

    Best Regards,
    Seth

Run a disk scan. Sounds like your disk drive has issues.

Ouch. If all else fails, treat this as an expensive lesson on making regular backups.

Personally, I do not trust SONAR's autoversioning or autosave. After each session, I manually copy my projects to separate drives (one NAS drive on the LAN, and one external USB drive), keeping the last 2 known good versions.

Kalle, thanks for your reply. All the usual happened in safe mode, ie, pop up box with options to select plugins, etc but then the project never opens, sonar seems to hang. keep in mind, other projects open as normal so i don't believe its my hard drive. One thing that leads me to believe it may be my fault is that, yes, i recently did defrag the hard drive and then noticed this problem soon after, though i'm not sure it happened directly afterwards.. the project is in its right place, checked ! thanks !

BlixYZ, I haven't looked yet as i've put it all off out of despair and disgust. I will begin looking today. And no, I don't know where to find the versions as I haven't had to before this. Thanks for the tips !

Seth, I am just now trying the drag method into a new project.. still hanging, but i now see the "opening project..." appear at the top, but still too long. could it be that when I defragged the drive recently, it moved a track or two out of the project folder and is making sonar struggle to find it ??

daveny5, I didn't think the drive would be at fault since this is an isolated case - ie, other projects work fine. but, I did recently defrag the drive, so maybe that is to blame ?

The versions, if the feature is enabled, are located in the directory with the cwp file. FYI, just because other data on the drive appears ok does not mean the disk is trouble free. Defrag would not relocate files with respect to the directory tree even if it physically relocated them on the drive. You may want to check your Windows event logs.

You could check the Windows Event Viewer for critical errors - a Windows-detected disk sub-system error would normally show up there, and it is a quick thing to check - but you might still want to run a full disk scan, just in case.

I wish I had some more ideas for you on this - sounds pretty grim for that project. I suppose if you needed to, you could try to locate as much of the project innards as possible, but I am not sure where things like automation and such are stored internally.  Certainly I would think that your recorded audio data would be recoverable, but that's not much consolation - perhaps others here in the forum know where the various project parts are stored, so you could evaluate if it is even possible to manually rebuild it - even partially.

I truly feel for you on this one.

A cakewalk project consists of a the project file and related audio files, hopefully stored in a directory under the project directory. Everything that is not audio is stored in the project file. If versioning is enabled, there could be multiple versions of the project file stored in the project directory. The files are easy to identify as the file names are the full project name appended with a timestamp. Without a good backup or version, there is no way easily reconstruct the non-audio portions of a project.

Ok, so i reinstalled my previous version of sonar 6 . I deleted the suspected plugins and there was one groove clip drum track that I bounced. This worked. problem solved. So, yes, it was a plugin that caused the problem. I deleted a few suspects so i cannot be sure which was the culprit but i have my suspicions that is was the ampeg SVX plug that did, as that was amongst the last I employed. Thanks again for all your help !!

Good to read that your work is saved .
I like to  remind you to at least backup once in a while good working projects so that there is no big gap between the last backup and the actuell project. This way makes it easy to try out, which Vst aso is the "nut."

thanks to all who posted here ! Pragi - yes, lesson learned !! i though i was good at saving but now, i see that i need to save after every session (which is almost every day...) One question remains tho, why didn't the project load in "safe mode" with all plugins not loaded ? ?? As it appears to have been a plugin problem...
