preamp hookup please help

anyone have the FA-66 and a external preamp hooked up? Ive been doing this for over a year and it isnt working.
I do get a signal but it is double preamped through the front - Ive hooked up
from pre xlr to trs,trs to xlr, xlr to xlr,trs to trs, and xlr to RCA (on rear of unit)

anyone know the input impedance of the FA-66?

any help PLEASE thanks ben

    hooked up what?

if it's a condensor mic do you have phantom power on?

    I'm really not following this:

could you explain better how you have things connected?

shure it is a codensor andyes i have phantom power on, but my FA-66 has 2 combo (xlr trs) inputs in the front and 2 rca ins on the back
I think that if I go from my pre to the combo ins it is double amping this, because no matter how i hook it up I get a much hotter signal than
my pre is sending even with the interface input knobs tured all the way down I want to buy a better pre but Im not shure if I should not just buy
a PCI interface to avoid interface preamps . does this help? oh and the rca hookups, are not preamped but have a gain of -10 to + 13dbu and is
not marked as to db on the unit guessing game

are RCA hookups as good as trs line ins?

    thank you

The RCA ins are just as good but not balanced so you might get some noise. The TRS plug in the front should be able to do line level.
What brand / model preamp is it ?

you just need to learn how to balance the 2 gain stages of the pre amp ansd Fa66. It not brain surgury, just connect the output of your pre-amp into the input of the fa66 (use 1/4" connections) and then just apply the correct amount to the preamp and the fa66. You do not need to use phantom power in the fa66, just use it as a line in.
No one can tell you what level to dial into both. yuoll need to figure that out on your own.

I've used, and still use, a SansAmp DI box infront of my FA-101 (and prior to that a FA-66).
Had no issues... connected via XLR with phantom power.
