pressing play makes EWQL hollywood strings lose its playback
Hi guys, I've run into an issue where I load up hollywood strings and within the Play interface I can hear the playback of sounds from the virtual keyboard but after I hit play within Sonar X1 (studio) I lose the playback within the Play interface and within sonar. basically, it works fine initially but pressing play seems to lose the playback of sounds. Anybody solved an issue like this? Please help. Many thanks!

Hi, I've run into this problem before as well and actually submitted the project to Willy Jones to have him look at it. The problem was with the midi filters. I can't remember exactly what he did to fix it, but he told me it was something that was selected in filters that shouldn't have been. I'm assuming "filters" will be in the same spot for X1 Studio as it is for me in Producer. Highlight the midi track, go to process and then find/change and you should see filter options. Try taking a look there and messing around a bit. See if it stops. My issue was, (and you can try this yourself) loading a softsynth up and when I press play, the synth would not engage. I could make sound from the synth manually by auditioning the sounds etc, so everything was connected right. But pressing play did nothing. Try this just to see if it is the same issue I had. Take the synth out of the project. Press play and bring the synth in while audio is playing. It should work that way. As soon as you press stop on the transport, it should be dead again. If this is the case, it's definitely something you need to tweak in that midi filters area. I'm just not sure what it would be. Sorry I can't remember the details...but that's the closest I had to this problem. -Danny

wow, ok. I'm looking into the midi filters. There are just so many parameters to work with, not sure where to start. Who is Willy Jones? Can I contact him?

Willy is a friend of mine who works for Cakewalk. When he had more time, he and I used to talk quite a bit and when something really had me stumped, he would help me out. I sent him the .cwp of the project I was having issues with and he sent me back the fixed project, told me what he did to fix it...and my dumb butt didn't remember what he told me it was so long ago. I know it was something in those filters...I just wish I knew where to tell you to start. As far as contacting him, you can try, but I can't promise you he'll get back to you. I've not talked to him in about 2 years. Just look up Willy Jones on the forum here and send him a private message. If he or one of the other Cake staff guys have a minute (which they usually don't lol) they may ask ya to dump all the audio out of the project and just send the .cwp with all your midi stuff and synths loaded up. I can't promise you anything, but it's worth a try. Good luck. -Danny

Are you working with material that you recorded or is it a downloaded/transferred midi file? If the first, is your volume control/expression pedal all the way down and your are getting a volume off signal from your controller/keyboard? If it is a downloaded file there may be CC info in the file that is conflicting with Hollywood strings because of different VST that was used when it was produced. For example, Hollywood strings will respond to CC1, CC7 and CC11 in controlling volume/expression. If any of these are set to 0 at the start of the track it will turn the volume right off. You can check for these either by looking at the controller lanes in PRV or with the event list editor under view.

Hi lorneyb2, I'm just starting a new file under the 'normal' template. I load up Hollywood strings, put in a few midi notes by mouse and it plays fine for the first time but after i click on stop it doesn't play again and it won't playback within the Play 3 interface either. It can't be the CC1, CC7, or CC11 because, as I said, it plays the midi notes the first time i play them but then doesn't play them anymore even though the it looks like it detects the fact that sound is playing.

it plays fine for the first time but after i click on stop it doesn't play again Open or create a project, then go to Edit ->Preferences -> Project -> Midi. Under the heading "Other Options" on that menu, does it have "Zero Controllers When Play Stops" checked ?. I'd say it probably does, which would explain it turninig off your instrument volume by zeroing CC1, CC7, CC11 every time you press stop. With instruments that respond to those CCs, it's always best to explicitly set those controllers - and actually use them to add expression. If you check the "Zero Controllers" + "Patch/Controller Searchback Before Play Starts", that will read the correct controller levels for when you hit play again. Check it out. Cheers - Cliff

ok that was awesome and did the trick as the 'zero controllers when play stops' was indeed checked. Thanks a whole lot, man!
