probably an obvious answer

this feels like a question with an obvious answer.

when I working in Sonar, I would like to keep a plain piano patch on my keyboard controller, just because I like to use piano to work stuff out.

But of course, every time I click on a track, the keyboard gets set to that sound.

Is there some simple way I can keep my kybd playing piano while I'm jumping back and forth among trax, editing, etc?

Thanks fr any help.

An interesting and logical problem...I can't figure out how that could be done without making all tracks switch to piano. Maybe one of the gurus has a trick in the sleeve.

OTOH, I can't help wondering how difficult it is to create, say, a convincing violin part using piano sounds.

What kind of controller are you using? The answer may lie there. You may be able to put it on a Midi receiving channel that isn't sending a patch change or disable patch changes from external. If your keyboard is accepting Midi info on all channels (OMNI On Mode) you should be able to change that.

Are you also using the sounds on your keyboard when playing back Midi? If not, you can always disconnect the Midi In of the keyboard. If USB you can disable the Sonar Midi Output device.

I would probably first try putting the keyboard on a channel I wasn't using. Let's say you put it on 16. Then never use channel 16 on a Midi track in Sonar.

I make one track a piano track even if there is no piano in the mix. When go to work out on the piano just be on that track. I tried turning the keyboard off then on and that works but as soon as you do anything on sonar it ties into the keyboard again.

Make sure you have Input Echo turned on for the piano track.

And disable Always Echo Current MIDI track in MIDI Playback ad Recording properties. That's the key to not having the sound change with track focus.

brundlefly: If I disable "Always Echo. . .," how do I smoothly play a different track when I want to ? Would I have to go to Properties and re-enable it?

Or is that the time to hit the echo button on the track whose instrument I want to hear? It's been so long since I set that all up . . . .

Yes to your last question. What Brundlefly was referring to is the option that automatically enables Input Echo on any Midi track you click on. If you don't have that option enabled you can still manually enable Input Echo on the track.

    Yup. It's working very nicely.

I'd ask "why didn't I think of that?" but the answer would be too obvious.
