problem copying audio clips

I'm having a major problem with copying audio clips in MC5. When I paste the copy into the track I want it right next to to original clip. But when I nudge the copy closer to the original, the end of the original clip disappears. It gets truncated and the only way to get it back is to undo the nudge or paste. I would like to be able to create drum tracks using imported audio clips and maybe cut and copy well played portions of recorded tracks but the problem makes that impossible. I'm using version 5.0.4.23

That is normal.... the one is hidden by the other but it's still there....

Play it to hear that it's still there.

You can right click on a clip and display the clip properties for a number of handy features.

Also, you can zoom in and split the clip very precisely so they DO butt up rather then hide part of one.

If you set the audio SNAP TO GRID to musical time, you can split anywhere in the music, if you set snap time to MEASURE, you can split only on the measure lines. By using measure settings, your splits will be able to butt up with no overlap, and drums often lend themselves well to that setting.

Unfortunately, when I play back it's not still there. I only plays the visible (remaining) part of the clip. I will check out what my snap setting is. The snap to measure setting should enable me to bring the clips in where they need to be without having to nudge them into place. Thanks. Bruce

I'm not on my DAW computer right now, but there is also a setting that allows 2 clips to exist overlapping each other.....and if that option is not selected.... "Blend old with New" it will be set to "Replace old with new" if I recall this correctly...... so pasting a new clip that overlaps an exisiting one would remove the old one.

It's in the copy/paste settings window.  I think.   I recall having to set it to "Blend".............. I think this applies to over dub recording as well.

These are things I don't mess with very often any more so the recall from memory is fuzzy.

There are actually two settings.  One for recording, as Bobby pointed to, and one for copy/paste/drag.

I'm currently looking at Music Creator 6... Here, the one for copy/paste is in the preferences dialog.  Make sure you're showing the advanced categories.  Near the bottom you'll find "Editing."  In Music Creator 5 it may be under OPTIONS|GLOBAL|EDITING (or something close to that).  Under "What to do with existing material" you can pick Blend old and new.

You can also check a box to have Music Creator ask you what to do every time.

If it is not set to "blend" I have also noticed in pasting that it will often push the existing clips further down the time line to "make room" for the new pasted one.

That really used to screw up my pasting until I changed the setting to 'blend".

Wow, just realized I haven't posted here since Nov. 1! I need some guidance from The Bapu.

Yeah, the copy and paste and drag and drop options are 'replace old with new', 'slide over to make room' and 'blend new with old'. The last is what you'll use most of the time. You might also want to uncheck the 'link to original clip' box.
Once you've selected something, that choice will be the default so you won't have to check the boxes again unless you need to.
