quality question
so ive had this xenyx 802 pre amp with my mxl 990 mic for about 2 months now and im noticing something. when i rap sometimes itll sound over modeulated when certain notes are hit. Its not by a lot but its noticable. Is this my mic or pre amp? or is this my cakewalk problem. If it is my mic or pre amp can u please give me a suggestion of how to fix this?

what exactly do you mean by "overmodulated"? depending on what you're hearing it could be any of the things you mentioned or a combination of them. are you recording into the red on the markers? the 990 should be a good mic - shouldn't really be a problem with it specifically. the 802 should work fine as well unless you've got it hooked up wrong, or have an improper gain stage.

I'm still not understanding what you mean by "too high", do you mean in pitch? can you post something for us to hear on soundclick or somewhere?

my suggestion would be to eliminate things one by one. try a different mic (see if you can borrow one if you don't have one), try a different preamp, etc. try turning down the gain on the sound card input. BTW - what kind of sound card do you have and which input are you plugging the 802 into?

The mic cable would be the first thing I would check. Had the same sort of thing happen to me a week or so ago . I was recording a live show that my band was doing. took a line out of the mixer straight into a digital multitracker. Played the first set back during a break, noticed distortion in certain ranges. Didn't make any sense, but changed the cables and the second set was fine.

Two thoughts, 1. try using a pop filter on the condenser, a wire coat hanger and some panty hose will work in a pinch (please don't ask) and step back a tad from the mike, 2. try using a light com[ressor setting on the recording.
